Matthew McConaughey Defends the Fanny Pack, May Singlehandedly Bring It Back

08/20/2014 at 12:05 PM ET

If we were to ask for your top Hollywood candidates to bring back the much-maligned fanny pack, we’d bet that Matthew McConaughey wouldn’t be near the top of the list. After all, the star has been the unofficial arbiter of all things cool since his Dazed and Confused days. But not only did he sport the accessory (approved by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Disney World-going moms everywhere) to cheer on the Houston Astros, he also defended its honor in an interview with CSN Houston.

When the reporter expresses some disbelief at McConaughey’s waist-wear of choice, he laughs, then says, “I’m not afraid of the fanny pack. Are you going to put the stuff in your pockets? You’ve got to put it on the side to make look it a little not as nerdy. But still, practicality wins out. I’ve got so much gear in here that I don’t want in my pockets.” And to drive the point home, he declares once more, “I’m not afraid of the fanny pack!”

“How many times are you around somebody and they’re like, ‘I forgot my so-and-so, I’ve got to go back to the car’?” he ponders. “And I’m like, ‘I got mine right here!’ … [Fanny packs] are on the way back. Some decade from now.” [Insert "Time is a flat circle" joke, then watch the whole video here.]

Are you convinced by McConaughey’s defense? Are you running out to buy it? What’s the best fanny pack you’ve ever owned? So many questions to contemplate this morning.

Good for him. Sorry to the “reporter”that we all don’t conform and leave the fanny pack on the shelf at home. When you have kids, or any other purpose in life, you don’t get hung up on things like carrying a fanny pack. How shallow! Just shows how insecure the “reporter” is!

Tarawa on

It’s pretty inspiring to see celebrities use their charisma on good causes. Good work McConaughey.

Smart man! I never got rid of fanny packs…don’t care what the so called fashion police say. They are so often needed.

Fanny pack? WHo cares? Look at that CHILD! What a looker!!! WOW. Go Levi!

SBLG on

Strange looking child….. His hair looks fried!
Looks like his mother I guess!

grudgrime on

Good for him! Especially when you have kids. I hate stuffing my pockets and stuff my pack when I head out for walks or to the park. Who decides what’s fashionable and what’s not. I think it looks better than a bunch of overstuffed lumpy pockets!

Mnmama on

Levi isn’t strange looking. His hair looks like it’s been bleached from the sun and chlorine. Why does there always have to be a snotty remark?

Bee Happy on

I use fanny packs a lot when I travel. They can be very convenient!
Good for him!

I’m liking the manny pack! Especially on him! :)

I love the fanny pack. Haven’t had one since the 80’s but they do work and work well. People now use a backpack to carry everything but good for him

Blue on

The man is hot. Anything he wears (and particularly when he doesn’t wear anything) is hot. Nothing more to be said. But his kid is going to be carrying on the family tradition of masculine gorgeousness in 20 years or so. First-grade girls the world over, prepare yourselves.

Angela on

Levi looks strange but people go on & on how cute Tori Spelling kids are. OK…

Debbie on

My parents both wore those in the 90’s. They make people look weird in the front. Not a fashion statement. Eww

Beth on

Yuck! I highly doubt they will come back!

Angelica on

He can rock the fanny pack!

Ivixen on

One difference is that his isn’t ugly and gawdy. It’s a nice leather one.

I agree, I hate carrying a purse on vacation or camping. This way your stuff is safer than in your pockets

Peg on

No offense People, but he was at Fenway Park at a Red Sox game, doesn’t matter who they were playing. He’s filming here.

JP on

My husband puts everything in my purse so he doesn’t carry anything but his wallet.

guest on

Has nothing to do with fashion, just don’t like them.

Janey on

I love the fanny pack! Great for travelling.

Josie on

Great job, Matthew!! Truly, most people don’t want to carry a bunch of heavy stuff in their pockets and/or purses. I hope to see the trend return.

Trisha on

Too bad People magazine didnt report the whole thing because I saw the interview and the reporter herself had one. It was the other commentators who did not like the fanny pack. Shame on you, People magazine!!

Nothing wrong with a fanny pack. Its practical, who cares what anyone thinks.

I love it, I never threw mine away…just like my cool jeans from the day it all comes back around…LOL

Fanny packs are awesome. I could care less what people think of me wearing one. Their practicality wins every time over whether or not it looks cool to wear one. For walking the dog they can’t be beat as you can stuff bags in them instead of having them bulging out of your pockets. They’re great for keys, MP3 players, etc. Long live the fanny pack!

wohaa on

Koo koo kanga roo …bringin it back!

Marie Mullin on

Good Matt

Emory on

Yes, but that is not a typical fanny pack, it is a stylish, hip looking one! I think he’s rocking it : ).

…………just show something meaningful towards the black society of Ferguson.

Avery Upton on

I have a fanny pack which I try to keep a first aid kit in it.!

Heather Deerwester on

Yes!!!! Finally, maybe the fanny pack will earn enough street creds for a full comeback ;) and that is one BEAUTIFUL child!!!! Looks just like his mama with a extra helping of dad’s charm.

Carol on

Heehee, it still makes me laugh that American’s use the word fanny for what us in the UK call lady parts!

Nanu 08 on

Whatever works for you……

Stormy on

REALLY…
People have used them for years. Who cares

Holly on

He also doesn’t wear deodorant… So he’s a man of questionable decisions.

SarahJane77 on

Any man who enjoys his children as much as Matthew seems to can wear a fanny pack any time. You want to pack what you need to spend solo quality time with your kids in a fanny pack? Go for it.

Lisa on

I never stopped using a fanny pack. They are so practical.

goob on

Nothing wrong with a hot dad wearing a fanny pack! I think its cute he cares enough to make sure he has what he needs for his son and doesn’t care what anyone thinks.

Star on

I would LOVE to see him with NOTHING but a fanny pack on. lol How wonderful would that be? OMG heart attack happening. lol

manomer on

I had a fanny pack back in the day….a neon color. LOL! Good times! I wouldn’t wear one now…but I don’t care what other people do or don’t do….I would rather see people wearing fanny packs then seeing women with large muffin tops hanging over their shorts b/c they won’t buy the right size…..THAT is a real issue….lol (And I am not knocking a woman’s size…I am knocking the ability to dress for their size)

Bob on

Finally!!! A kindred spirit speaks truth to power. The fanny pack was one of the greatest accessories ever invented. Where else you gonna carry your stuff hands free. You can trace its origin back to the Scottish sporin. A man needs a place for his stuff!

t smith on

Fanny packs are cool again just ask my kid…she confiscated mine from 20 years ago to use for band camp.. holds all her stuff and stays out of her way while she marches
