Brace Yourself: Anna Wintour Does the Ice Bucket Challenge (Plus, More Fashion Insiders Who Joined the Cause)

08/20/2014 at 01:22 PM ET

By now your Facebook and Instagram feeds are flooded with videos of friends taking the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. And you know that Hollywood has joined the cause in full force. But there was one person we never expected to pour freezing water on top of her perfectly tamed bob: Anna Wintour. The Vogue editor-in-chief proved us very wrong — if it’s true that the Devil Wears Prada, then hell has officially “frozen over,” because she not only participated, she did it in a big way!

Wintour accepted the charity-benefiting challenge from her daughter Bee Shaffer (who was originally nominated by actress Allison Williams, if you’re not up on your celeb ice bucket chain). Clad in her sophisticated signature floral day dress and oversize shades, the legendarily icy editor is the picture of composure — right up until she gets doused by a number of ice-water-filled buckets, with a little help from her young family members. Watch the clip below.

Shaffer took a somewhat anti-Anna approach to the challenge, wearing a white T-shirt, black bra and opting for some NSFW language to express her feelings about the ice bath. (When posting the zoomed-in version of her mom’s video, Shaffer does say her mom took a more “dignified” approach to the challenge.)

Wintour joins the growing number of fashion and beauty industry stars who have jumped on the charity bandwagon and doused themselves for all their followers to see. From Diane von Furstenberg’s purple bathing suit moment (on a yacht!) to Gisele Bündchen‘s beautifully shot video, catch more fashion insiders joining in below.

Have you joined the cause yet? Are you surprised Anna did? Share your thoughts below.

does not surprise me at all. From what i can tell she supports a lot of charities, why not this one?

Can someone please explain the purpose of the ice or ice water? I know this is just for fun to raise money and awareness for ALS but is the ice/ water meant to represent something?

We had this sort of craze earlier this year in Norway, with two modifications – it was “Jump in the ocean” and you could choose your charity. And swimming in the ocean, in spring, in Norway, is kinda cold :p

Love AW for her personality and strong sense of fashion( sauf that Kardiashia Vogue ,cover uff) cold water on your head , cold , bu I don’t DVF was much of a challange because she is en plein soleil , probably very hot and she already wearing a bathing suit , but was nice to join in for the fun and the cause .

Not surprised to these.

It should have been blood dumped over her head for all of the animals that died so that she can wear their skins.

Mona – it’s my understanding that people who have ALS lose their temperature sensation and ability to regulate temperature as the disease progresses, so I guess it’s a bit like suffering in solidarity.
