Laverne Cox Explains Her 'FFPS' Fashion Philosophy - and Gives a Hint About Her Emmys Gown
Laverne Cox may be a red carpet newbie, but she knows how to go glam like the pros. The Orange Is the New Black star has all her style and beauty prepped for the Emmys next Monday, and everything she’s wearing will be a custom creation — from head to toe.

“It’s still being hand-sewn,” Cox told PEOPLE about her custom Emmys wig at Saturday’s Creative Arts Emmys. “They do a mold of your head with plastic … it didn’t take very long. We selected like six or eight shades of hair — and it was like 26 inches long! We’re going to layer it.”
She’ll also be wearing a custom gown — though she kept the details under wraps before the big reveal. “I can’t tell you the designer yet, but [he or she] gave us a few options of things, we picked what we liked and it was made for my body.”
Paramount to bringing her dream dress design to life? A perfect fit. “Color is important, but silhouette [is key],” she explained. “I have a fashion philosophy: ‘FFPS.’ Fit, Fabric, Proportion, Silhouette. So all of those things are really important — color too — but FFPS is sort of my philosophy and I go that way.”
Cox is up for the Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series award, and she’s not only excited for her first-ever nom, she’s thrilled to be in a category with some of her heroes. “I wish we could all win. Part of it feels weird, because I’m nominated with these amazing actresses,” she said. “It’s Melissa McCarthy, it’s Tina Fey, it’s Joan Cusack, it’s Natasha Lyonne, it’s Uzo Aduba. They’re so good, and I’m in it and I’m just like, ‘Does that mean I’m good?’ You know, I think we’re all very insecure as actors.”
