Three Teen Choice Awards Braids We Need In Our Lives
There were a ton of noteworthy trends on the Teen Choice Awards’ blue carpet Sunday night, but only one that had PEOPLE StyleWatch editors texting each other “I’m totally trying that this week.” The stars of your favorite teen soaps brought their best braid game to the show, and because we need a little drama of our own, we each picked a favorite look that had us dying to hit a braid bar (or spend a few extra minutes in front of the mirror — we have varying degrees of braid expertise).

Brittany Talarico, Associate Style Editor: I’ve been calling Nina Dobrev’s look the ‘In-case-I-bump-into-Ian-and-Nikki-I-need-to-have-the-perfect-hair’ style, because the actress pulled out all the fashion and beauty stops on the Teen Choice Awards red carpet. Aside from her matching watercolor-print Vionnet separates, I was obsessed with her braided hairstyle. But according to her mane master Riawna Capri, it’s way more than just a plait. “@NinaDobrev #TEENCHOICE #SNEAKPEEK! It’s not a knot, barely a braid, it’s a #RedCarpetRope! 😍 More details to come! 😘,” she shared on Instagram.
Eager to try the “Red Carpet Rope Braid” at home? Me too. Here’s the rundown: Separate your hair into three sections, twist each section clockwise and then take those twisted sections and braided them counter clockwise to “showcase distinct texture,” according to Capri and her team. If you want Dobrev’s full messy look, pull out some loose pieces to frame your face. Capri uses all KMS California products to complete the style.
Alex Apatoff, Style News Editor: Lucy Hale’s hair guru Kristen Ess wrote on Instagram that “Lucy’s hair should have its own show,” and I’ve gotta say, I agree with her. From the front, it was all flirty side-parted updo; from the back, it was an intricate, elegant and super-shiny plait. The mix of waterfall and side-to-side weaving at the crown that cascades into a chunky braid is fresh and unexpected — it’s not easy to make a down-the-middle French braid look sexy and grown-up, but she manages. No wonder Hale wrote “@kristin_ess really out did herself with this one …!”
Loni Venti, Style and Beauty Editor: I nearly stood and applauded when I feasted my eyes on Shay Mitchell’s epic plaits. That perfectly lived-in texture! Those gorgeous loose-hanging strands! The freaking ring adorning the end of the tail! I’ve seen jewelry incorporated into coifs before, but never like this. Adding a ring is so out of the box and just freaking cool. Plus it definitely won’t snag your strands like necklaces or bracelets can (I’ve learned this the hard way, friends). Of course I instantly stalked Shay’s stylist, Daven Mayeda’s Instagram for hints on how to DIY this masterpiece. He credits her sexy texture (AKA “sexture”) to Oribe’s Dry Texturizing Spray — the holy grail of all texturizing products. I’m definitely attempting to recreate this on Saturday.
