We Tried It: Votre Vu's Silk Stockings

We Tried It: Votre Vu’s Silk Stockings Picture Perfect Leg Lustre

What it is: An oil/lotion meant to add a golden shine to legs, giving an airbrushed nude stocking look without the itch of hose

Who tried it: Catherine Kast, Style Writer

Why I did it: I needed something to fill the void of the dreaded post-self tanner fade. Also, it’s LWD season and some of us need all the tan we can get

Level of difficulty: If you have hands and a body, you can do this. Or I guess if you had a friend with hands, they could help you apply this pretty easily

I am fair-skinned and semi-proud of it. But during the summer it’s rare I let my own skin shine through thanks to some amazing self tanners on the market, including the one I swear by, a Stylewatch staff fave: the Tan Towel. (Seriously, try it.) But for days when the Tan Towel has done it’s job, and my skin is like, “Let me live!”, I am always on the lookout for a good glow in the form of daily use lotions and sprays. I’ve tested so. many. different. kinds. And since there’s no way I’m never going to pull a Duchess Kate and wear nude stockings in the New York City heat, I decided to give Votre Vu’s Silk Stockings lotion a try.

Like others on the market, it promises to hide imperfections like light freckles and (as they say on their website), “tiny” veins. Varicose and raised birth marks need not apply to be fully covered, but they will be slightly blurred and faded. It works quite well, but make sure that you follow two main self-tanning rules: exfoliate prior to use, and don’t get it on your clothes.

I applied this while wearing a white mini, which really wasn’t the smartest idea. There’s no indication on their site about whether or not the product transfers to clothing, but based on the texture of the lotion (more like a body oil than a cream) I felt like it was definitely going to stain my dress if I wasn’t careful. You may be able to tell in the picture, but I have a slight ombré effect at the top of my thighs, because I didn’t want to apply the product too close to the hem. I rubbed whatever was left on my hands on my arms for a little shine there too.

After one quick coat of the lotion I looked down at my shins and saw shine. I let it set a minute and added another coat to add more density to the color. The closer I looked, the more I realized that the product was adhering to the minimal stubble that I had from shaving two days before, creating pin prick-size flecks of brown where the lotion got stuck. I was fretting about it, but no one who was farther away than two feet could tell — it did look pretty airbrushed. I suggest applying this the morning after you shave. Even though the main ingredients in the product are soothing and anti-inflammatory (like Chamomile and St. John’s Wort oil), I suggest giving post-shave legs a few hours before applying.

Verdict: I’m not going to pretend that I don’t get excited whenever someone says, “You look so tan!” The day I wore Silk Stockings I was practically bursting with joy because I heard that phrase so often. This is a good product to add to your secret weapon collection — you know, with those other products that work, but also give you a confidence boost.
