Curvy Girl Chic's Allison Teng Gives Her Tips for Wearing a Crop Top

A few weeks ago, I posted about a crop top outfit I’d put together. The top was what I like to call a “gateway crop top.” It was a little bit looser, longer and it had sleeves — a great way to ease yourself into the trend. This time, I wanted to take things one step further and show plus size girls that they can go all out with the look, too!

I chose a fun printed crop top from Forever 21+. I love this brand for its budget-friendly, on-trend pieces! And, it’s a great place to find items — like this crop top — that break plus size fashion “rules” and show curvy girls that they don’t have to hide their shape. I also love the cool tropical pattern and summery vibe. Bold prints can sometimes feel intimidating, but in a smaller dose like this, they’re so easy for girls of all sizes to rock. Plus, the top hits at my natural waist for a super curve-enhancing look. Ultimately though, when it comes to successful crop-top sporting, it’s really all about what you pair the top with.

For me, a flared skirt (this one is by Duro Olowu for JC Penney) is a great option because it balances my broader shoulders and narrower hips. If I’m wearing something more revealing on top, I usually opt for something with a little more coverage on the bottom. The skirt sits higher up on my hips so I’m not showing a ton of skin, and I find that this flared shape looks great on just about everybody. Bonus: The bright green shade is so eye-catching. I never shy away from a notice-me shade—I believe all plus girls should embrace color. The key is finding a shape and style that works for you. Plus, the skirt picks up the green in the top really nicely, without being too matchy-matchy.

Ankle strap shoes are a favorite of mine. These wedges by Mossimo have thin neutral straps that are close to my skin tone, so they don’t break up the line of my legs. My Kate Spade “Hello Sunshine” bag (get a similar look here!) and Forever 21 sunglasses add a feel-good pop of neon yellow to the mix!

Bottom line: Trends like crop tops don’t have to feel tricky—they can look great on everyone. It’s all in how you style them.

What do you think of Teng’s look? What are your rules for wearing crop tops.

Hi Allison
Good post. How much skin is appropriate to show for most of women who don’t have model figure?
