What's Robin Wright's Secret to Staying in Shape?

She’s starring on a hit television show. She’s planning her wedding to fiancé Ben Foster. She’s the proud mother of two. And somehow, in between it all, actress Robin Wright, 48, manages to stay in amazing shape. So, what’s her secret? “I have Spanx on,” Wright told PEOPLE at the Los Angeles Confidential party celebrating her cover issue this week in Hollywood. “Always! I have to wear them all the time!”

Yes, Wright uses Spanx “to hold the bakery in”, as she jokes, but (of course!) she doesn’t rely solely on the support garment. “I ran on the beach this morning,” Wright said. “Running gets everything done, doesn’t it? Covers it all.” And with the new season of House of Cards getting ready to start filming and an upcoming wedding to plan, Wright is focusing on her figure more than ever. “I’m trying to do the paleo diet. No carbs. I’ve got to get thin for the show,” explained Wright.

But of course, the key to looking so radiant doesn’t lie entirely in supportive undergarments or a strict diet — being happy goes a long way. “I love my life,” Wright told PEOPLE. “What are you going to say? I love my life right now.”

What do you think of her fit-figure “secret?” Do you love her on House of Cards?

IDK…she might be wearing spanx, but the scene in House of Cards when her photographer lover undresses her can’t lie: that body looks like a 20 something body. No spanx.

She’s in good shape. But just not cute like she used to be. I know everyone doesn’t stay young forever and whatnot, but I’m guessing stress and stuff must have done a number on her…

Not everyone over 40 blows up into an elephant. I know many many thin people over 40 and 50. It’s in their genes. There is no set law or rule that people must become fat at a certain age. Everyone is different.

Really? on

What about genetics? It seems as though she is naturally thin!

She is perfect. No need to lose weight. She is gorgeous. And happiness does trump all.

She is just a breath of fresh air. She is one of the first people to cut her hair short (I think she started the trend). She hasn’t done an ounce of plastic surgery to her face. I love her style in House of Cards. Beautiful lady.

maggie on

hate the short hair on her….she looks like a man in the face.

She smokes. Be candid, why don’t you????? As for someone who said she has done no plastic surgery, she does do Botox. why does she need Spanx? Ick. There’s no reason someone gets “fat” simply with the passage of time. And man that is such an unflattering picture of her!

Thank you for being honest! You don’t eat everything you want, you exercise, and still wear spanx lol Truth is, she takes care of herself and is discipled. Her job requires a certain body type and she’s always been a runner. I’ve loved her for years and respect her more as she has allowed herself to age gracefully, elegantly and naturally.

Why don’t you guys do an article on how George Clooney stays in shape? He’s older than Robin Wright. Oh wait, I forgot, men don’t have fitness secrets only women do.

Spanx give me heartburn!

hannie on

I saw her in Adore. The woman does not need spanx. Her body is amazing!!

I’m 50, don’t wear Spanx, 125 lbs, and have a husband 12 years younger than I am. Does that matter? NO. I’ve been 88 lbs and miserable. 178 lbs and miserable.

The only advice I have to give is to be happy in your own skin. Don’t worry about what anyone says about you.

You have only ONE LIFE… live it! Enjoy it. Embrace your flaws as much as you embrace your good points. Live your life for yourself. Everything’ll fall into place once you do.

I really like Robin but it’s kinda annoying how the media acts like people are brave or candid for stating something that is obvious. I don’t doubt that she has a great body but many, many people especially ones in the public eye wear spandex even if they are young and in shape. Ex. Kim Kardashian

Running really does do it all if a person generally eats healthfully. I’m in my 40s and weigh a little less than I did in my 30s. You don’t have to blow up in middle age; some disciplined habits, commitment to happiness, and regular exercise really aren’t so difficult. The payoff is terrific.

She is stunning. She was beautiful in her Santa Barbara days, but I think she is even more gorgeous now. She is being modest – that body comes from hard work. Love her and wish her lots of happiness personally and professionally. House of Cards is the only good thing about winter!

darkstart on

what does “shape” mean? Do her upper arms have definition? How many pullups can she do? How quickly does she run a mile? What is her resting heart rate?

who cares?????

In response to “Thinksky” – Yes, there is a big reason someone gets fat, “simply with the passage of time” (in your words). Unfortunately, menopause can have a huge effect on a woman’s metabolism and as a result, weight gain is common. I was always thin, had no problem losing weight and am struggling now. :(

Maybe a little make up and a not so manly hairstyle.

She’s more honest than most who pretend they eat what they want and do some yoga. Think I remember her saying Sean P liked muscular women so she always worked out with weights. Look at her in White Oleander. Perfect body. She looks great now just like her with longer hair.

PeeP on

I watch her on house of cards and as a woman of 44 I think her body is enviable.

She was once very pretty. …didn’t age too well.

Not a fan of the hair style. Looks really harsh on her. Makes her look manly. She’s in good shape though.

She’ll always be the Princess Bride to me!

caramel on

She is in extremely good shape and is humble about it. Love this woman – appears to be so real. Best of luck to her – glad she dropped the weight of the man called Penn because he held her career and life back. This new guy seems to dote on her!

Lisa on

Not a fan of the short hair and this picture is not the best. Most of the time she is a pretty lady and looks good for 48.

YoCo on

Unflattering hairstyle though.

A size 2, and she “always, has to wear spanx all the time”??? Sad. Sad. Sad.

darkcherrybaby on

she got a horrible head shape

All the pretty people get old someday. Ugly old. Even Robin Wright. She’s only one thin decade from becoming a hag.

✰✰✰my friend’s sister is losing 10 pounds every 2 weeks. She has been over weight but last month she started to take these new supplements and she has lost 40 pounds so far. take a look at the site here ✔✔✔ NEWSDIETS.COM

If you took away her cigarettes Robin Wright would blow up to a woman twice her age.

She’s been a smoker for years. She has recently tried to quit, not sure how much success she’s had. She talked about it during an interview. I guess she and Spacey have to smoke on the set, and that makes it hard to quit. When you’re a smoker, you tend to eat less. Food is less appealing, and you have something to do with your hands and mouth. Hope she is able to kick the habit. She sounds like a pretty grounded person. I don’t smoke, but my Mom did, and she had a hard time quitting, but finally did!

Marisa Beatriz on

She’s pretty and all but how is she getting married to a cutie like Ben Foster. They look mis-matched.

KindFoodFarm on

Doing a “no carb” version of Paleo, which is certainly not inherently no- or even low-carb, while continuing to run regularly, work an demanding job, plan a wedding and take care of a familial, is the road to ruin. Robin Wright may look amazing, but adrenal fatigue and/or thyroid disorders are just two of the possibilities she is inviting by this regimen. She’s a terrific actress and probably a lovely person; I just hope she realizes before it’s too late that she’s flirting with burnout.
