Kate Hudson: On Finding Workout Motivation When You're Just Not Feeling It (Plus: Exclusive Photos!)
Every time Kate Hudson steps out in a bikini, we all have to talk about her beach accessories (remember the body chain?) and speculate on her fitness routine. So when we spoke with the actress (and co-founder of Fabletics activewear) recently, we figured we might as well get the facts straight from the source. Is it Zumba? Marathons? Zero-gravity yoga?
“I’m a DVD girl,” Hudson told PEOPLE. “I always go back to the Brazilian Butt lift DVD, which is really fun and a good workout for when you’re traveling. You can follow the program. Even if you are a mom, and you have a million things to do and the kids are at school, I love the DVDs. They make it hard to say you didn’t have the time.”
Clearly, she’s making the time: Hudson flaunts her abs and toned physique in her latest Fabletics ads (debuting in July) while showing off the colorful summer pieces that will launch as part of the new collection. From a printed pants to comfy sports bras, the star says her main focus has been making clothes that are versatile (so you’ll still feel cute if you run errands after that barre class — and inevitably run into someone you know.)
“If you are going to be active, it starts with putting on your clothes,” she said. “If you feel good in them you might want to show up to the spin class or yoga class. I really want to incorporate the versatility of working out and lifestyle [in my designs] — having that being a motivating factor for women to be active.”
Fabletics has expanded beyond the basics with the new collection, which Hudson says is her favorite to date. “We wanted to see how woman responded to our basics and once we saw what’s working, we started to have more fun with prints and getting more fashion forward. I love the real colorful prints. I’m also really excited about our open back tees. They’re a little bit more loose. I know for me, depending on what period in my life [I'm in], I like ones that cover the tushy. They’re slouchy and off the shoulder, really comfortable.”
And on those days when not even a DVD or cute clothes can motivate Hudson to hit the gym, the star just turns to her pump-up playlist.
“Music for me is one of the most motivating factors, maybe because I danced for a long time as a hobby,” she shared. “Sometimes a really earnest sad depressing song will actually be what motivates me. I’ll just start doing really bad contemporary dance to some really emotional song. When I want a good workout I like old school hip hop — “Can I Kick It” always seems to get me revved up. Aerosmith’s Big Ones is also a great album to put on when working out — Steven Tyler at his best. It’s nostalgic and hard hitting. And then of course anything girlie. Beyoncé is great. Any of the beautifully empowered females.”
