Sinéad O'Connor Wears Black Wig, Looks Unrecognizable on New Album Cover

06/03/2014 at 05:49 PM ET

Sinéad O’Connor has come a long way from wearing the ripped jeans and combat boots she was known for in the ’80s and ’90s. The singer, 47, is getting ready to release her 10th studio album, I’m Not Bossy, I’m the Boss, and judging by the cover art, she’s been taking style notes straight out of the Britney book.

Clad in a black second-skin leather dress (which completely covers her large Jesus torso tattoo), O’Connor wears a banged wig and dramatic smoky eye as she clutches a guitar in the photo. Maybe this album marks an alter-ego of sorts for the outspoken Irish star, whose past covers have been very raw and emotional.

The singer turned to her website to share the inspiration behind the name of her latest record. “Just a note to explain the title of my forthcoming album IS taken from Sheryl Sandberg’s Ban Bossy campaign,” she wrote. “Originally I had a different title, The Vishnu Room, but a few months back when I saw the phrase ‘I’m not bossy, I’m the boss’ and became aware of the Ban Bossy campaign, I wished I could re-name the album, since indeed it can be tricky being a female boss and I think Sheryl’s campaign is a terribly important one.”

I’m Not Bossy, I’m the Boss will be released Aug. 12. Are you excited for her new music? What do you think of her new look?

She was on my flight from Dublin to Heathrow this past November and we held on to the same pole on the airport transit bus from the plane to arrivals at Heathrow. This isn’t just a wig and make-up. This is not just a little airbrushing or photo shop, but completely digitally altered. The only thing I will say she really was tiny. Short and small drowning in her over sized sweater. She had tatoos on her cheeks and her face had never scene moisturizer. However, I will give her kudos for flying coach.

It’s bad-ass Sinead! Maybe it took her a while to get her groove back by losing weight and taking her meds…hope she feels good about herself and she’s healthy. That’s the most important thing. I like this look a lot and am interested in hearing new music from her!!

I saw this picture on Facebook. I had no idea it was her. She looks awesome!

Sinead O’Conner looks really good and healthy. I thought her photo looked a lot like Jessie J who sings Pricetag w/ the young black Rapper. I thought she looks more like a skinny man dress up as a woman!

I would love to hear new music. It’s been a long time since been around the world and I can’t find my baby been out. I see she is letting her grow back. … and how about those tattoes! Just because u wear a tattoeo.

Does not mean u r a Christian! It could just me u have an intent to deceive or like the way a tat looks or want the healing or positive feeling that u think and image may bring!

The second photo isn’t altered, so I’m not sure what all the naysayers are yapping about…

I hate to ask this but it looks like she dropped a lot of weight, or am I the only one seeing that?
