One Direction's Hair Guru Lou Teasdale Shows How to Master the Quiff

05/29/2014 at 09:00 AM ET

We don’t cover guy grooming that often, but when you get the opportunity to chat with the mastermind behind One Direction’s remarkable hair, you take it. Lou Teasdale has been styling Harry, Niall, Zayn, Liam and Louis on tour and for their red carpet appearances, so we had to find out some of her secrets.

“I like to keep the products simple on the boys,” Teasedale tells PEOPLE. “I try to use two products on each boy — one styling product and one finishing product so that I don’t end up piling more and more product in and it looks too ‘done.’ I’m also buzzing when I find a product that I use on, like, 3 out of 5 boys. Then it’s less to carry around.”

One of those products she can use on multiple members of 1D — Fudge Urban Sea Salt Spray. “It’s a must for boys’ hairstyles,” Teasdale, who is an ambassador for the brand, shares, adding it’s that it’s the perfect spray to give lift to a quiff — one dude hair look that’s always in style (and can always be spotted on multiple members of the band). See how Teasdale masters the look in the video below.

Teasdale also takes on a motherly role for the boys, making sure she has her bag stocked with all the essentials. “In my kit I keep five toothbrushes and toothpaste, plasters, body spray, pain killers, eye drops, nail clippers, anti-histamines — there’s nothing worse than hay fever on a shoot — razors, shaving foam … basically everything a man needs.”
