We Tried It: Drinking Clay (Because Shailene Woodley Told Us To)

Today’s We Tried It is in honor of one of our favorite kooky beauty gurus: the inimitable Shailene Woodley! While most other celebs on the red carpet are trying serums, lasers and blood facials (yes, that’s a thing), the Divergent star takes a holistic approach to taking care of her body. When the actress isn’t swishing sesame oil or making her own soap, she likes to lounge around and sip on a cold one — of clay water, that is.

“I’ve discovered that clay is great for you because your body doesn’t absorb it, and it apparently provides a negative charge, so it bonds to negative isotopes,” Woodley says. “And, this is crazy: it also helps clean heavy metals out of your body.”

While we wouldn’t have assumed that we were full of metal, we were intrigued enough by her passionate promotion of clay consumption to try it ourselves. PEOPLE reporter Catherine Kast, our resident tester of celeb-based cleanses, volunteered to try out this unusual concoction.

Anyone wanting to detox the lead, mercury, cadmium or any other heavy metals from their body should look at using the ingestable medical grade mineral called Zeolite as it does a much better job then any plant or clay based products due to its ability to grab the heavy metal into its cage like structure and safely carry it all the way out from the body without releasing anything back into the body to be reabsorbed to make the person feel sick as plant and clay detox products do.
