Why Did Jessica Seinfeld Go Blonde? 'Why Not?'

05/14/2014 at 12:00 PM ET

Change is good. Just ask Jessica Seinfeld. Last week, the longtime brunette debuted her new blonde pixie on Instagram, saying, “You can never be too old or too brunette to be blonde.”

When PEOPLE caught up with her this week at the premiere of HBO’s The Normal Heart in Manhattan, we had to ask: Why did she go blonde?

“Everyone is asking me why — and basically, ‘Why not?'” said Seinfeld, 42, who is married to comedian Jerry Seinfeld, 60. “I have no attachments to anything physically,” she continued. “My husband always says, ‘I wish you were more materialistic.’ I just have no attachments (to things) so I don’t care. If I hate my hair, it will grow.”

In December, the mother of three swapped out a longer bob for an edgy pixie cut. Last week, her colorist, Sarah Spratt, continued Seinfeld’s transformation, working with New York City stylist Rheanne White to make her cut — with its rock-and-roll vibe — match the color.

“I’m impulsive and it’s good to be impulsive about things that don’t matter too much,” she said.

And while plenty of people have weighed in on her new look, those who really matter in her life — her children, Sascha, 13, Julian, 11, and Shepherd, 8, and her husband of 14 years — gave her their stamp of approval.

“The kids loved it,” she shared. “And my husband loved it, which is really nice. I think it took a little bit of getting used to” — for her and for others (including this reporter!) who have done a double-take when they have see her in the last week. “I am unrecognizable, which I love! That is fun.”

I really like it. I think it looks good on her and if she loves it then that’s all that really matters anyway.

Amaryllis on

It’s not a good look on her, but as she said, it will grow back. Or maybe she likes it.

Karolina on

Personally I think she looks much better as a brunette. But in the end, sometimes we all need a change and just like she said..it grows back eventually!

Angela on

Like her better as a brunette but I give her credit for trying something new.

StopIt on

I think it ages her and accentuates her wrinkles.

yahoo on

She use to be attractive, now she looks like Jerry. Go figure.

Joules on

rock-and-roll vibe? hopefully for her sake her hair grows fast.

AJLind on

Beautiful. With other celebrities dying their hair purple and grey and white I think blonde is refreshing. What I think is even nicer and refreshing to see is that she is not trying to scrub away every line in order to look younger. She is beautiful.

AnsleyT on

If she were really honest, she’d admit that she went blond cuz she had so many gray hairs…

Candy on

Her face is too long for that look but she has a nice face

PeeInIt on

Your family is being nice. I like your cookbook, but your hair is horrible. Your stylist should have swayed you. Don’t go back.

Ryry on

Red Flag, something is up.

Men don;t like anything women do to thier hair. Women read all the gossip mags and watch the red carpet affairs on TV and start to fantasize. Oh I wish my hair was like this or that. Oh I wish my lips were lik that or this. Oh I wish I was like this, that or something else. The average woman in America is 5’4″ tall and a size 14. If your not height and weight proportionate, nobody cares what kind of purse you carry. what color your hair is, or if your finger nails are painted black. Be who you are and take care of yourself and get rid of all the stress in your life. No man, (even if it is you husband) ever asked a woman out, because she use to be a brunette.

Jerry always says, “Why can’t you be more materialistic?” Hmmm…

Marie Mullin on

She seems shallow.

46yearoldmom on

She is so ugly. Beak face and all. Not to mention her features are crooked and awkward. He made a big mistake not marrying Shoshanna. She was HOT and still is.

Not attractive

Looks great!!t I never thought she was particularly attractive, but now think that she is quite attractive. Really a lovely looking woman.

dancer92136 on

I love her…she is so down to earth, but this hair is a little harsh.

janet on

geez, she has alot of wrinkles for being only 42. I am 10 years old than she is and I dont have those wrinkles. Lucky me I guess.,

Kari on

Looks like my mother’s hair and she is 76. Also..her smile always looks forced.

Carole on

Not a good look for her. She looks much older and it accentuates her wrinkles.

Sarah S. on

This darker shade of blonde looks better than than the platinum before. I’m a fan of pixies, but for her I think she needs a bit longer hair.

Ur husband and kids r lying to u so mommy won’t cry…. U look like an idiot… The actual hair cut looks like it was done at a $10 place next to a grocery store that mainly does men…

sharon on

I think this makes her look soooooooooooo old, but hey if she likes it that’s all that matters

janet on

You look happy and healthy and great…………

Skinnyminnie2006 on

Jessica Seinfeld says she is not materialistic? That is funny. This is a woman who ditched a scion of the NYC theater scene, about a month into their marriage, so she could sink her claws into a much wealthier man. Please, spare us all.

sabrinainde on

That’s not a pixie, People.

bitsy on

she looks like a completely different person. not horrible, but in my opinion, not a good look for her. she looks old……….for 42

Jay on

I think she has a great attitude. It is hair, it will grow back. Also I think alot of people thought she may be materialistic, at least when her and Jerry first got together, so it’s nice to see she is not. Rock on, girl!

The cut looks terrible on her. Makes her look very old.

Merin on

Jerry is 60?????

When did that happen?

Mikala on

@ merin
hahahahahahahaha! i said the same thing?! in fact, i heard them say he was 60 on tv, and had to rewind it to make sure i was hearing that age CORRECTLY?! lol

Noodles on

I agree with StopIt, it accentuates her wrinkles but at least you know she doesn’t use botox.

Cesa on

She’s is more unattractive as a blond.

smithy on

I think short hair suits her, but not this particular style or color.

MJ on

She has managed to add ten years to her face (awful)..

Boo on

Jerry Seinfeld is SIXTY???

In the same week that I realise Friends ended a decade ago.

God, I feel old :p

guest on

I like it!

Tango on

She looks like an old man. Bad move there Jess.

Sara on

Wow, she looks older than her 42 years. I’ve seen her before with her longer, dark hair and the look didn’t age her.

Marcy on

Awful! Looks 10 years older and hair color does not go with her skin tone. Of course her husband says he “approves”. What else would he say, if he wants to stay married!

Patti on

Go for it- it makes you look young and fun!!!!!!!!!! why not!!!!!

Mary Ellen on

She looks cute. Maybe we are so used to her as a brunette it doesnt feel right! lol She’s either a smoker or has spent too much time in the sun….

Maureen on

I think it’s a bad photo. The style and color are very aging.

webding on

I think she did it after taking advice on how to soften an aging face. However, I hope she goes back to brunette and puts forward the example of being au natural. She has a lovely trim figure which I think goes a long way.

Pamela in Dallas on

Jerry wishes his wife were more materialistic? In a word…wow.

Nor on

Wow. Someone sounds defensive! This is not a good look. And – you’re not materialistic?? Please!!!!

Ctgal on

She looks old and awful – change it back to brown! She used to be so pretty!
