Met Gala 2014: Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's Dresses Get Our 'Love It or Leave It' Debate

05/06/2014 at 01:24 PM ET

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen always do their own thing on the Met Gala red carpet (and, well, during life in general), and this can range from deeply chic to “bag lady adjacent.” And because they are constantly walking that line, we often find ourselves on polar opposites of the “love it or leave it” debate. That’s why when they hit Monday night’s red carpet in voluminous vintage ballgowns, two editors here had decidedly different reactions. One of us said, “Wow, that’s pretty good for them and they brushed their hair!” and the other responded “I’m worried you’ve been drinking.” So without further ado, let us debate these looks below.

PRO: Alex Apatoff, Style News Editor: Let’s get a few things out of the way first. Their hair and makeup is on point, as in, so clean, chic and classic that I think it belongs on bridal beauty inspiration boards. Facially, they’re defined and polished but not overdone, and I love a good ponytail. Next, these dresses are totally in line with their aesthetic without drowning them in fabric. Ashley’s military-inspired gown has a fun ’50s vibe, while Mary-Kate lets her engagement ring do all the talking in her sort of sweetly eccentric striped sleeved number. I love that they’re playing up their own style without letting the dresses wear them, and for this, I say the Olsens are in.

AGAINST: Brittany Talarico, Associate Style Editor: I was tempted to book a ticket to San Francisco just to check on Alex’s mental state, because I’m totally shocked she’s on the MK and Ashley train right now.

Yes, the twins touch upon the Charles James theme (Ashley in a couture button-embellished design and Mary-Kate in a sheer-sleeved striped dress-slash-coat-slash-I’m-confused) and both sisters look more subdued compared to years past, but I’m so tired of their whole, “I’m going to wear clothes that totally swallow me up” dressing MO. Can you imagine what they would look like in actual gowns — you know, ones that showed off some arm and maybe a little collarbone? My bet is “pretty gorgeous.” Also, the whole simple slicked-back pony/bun thing feels a bit informal for their coat dresses. Basically, the only think I really love about this photo are those cheekbones.

I generally think they look dreadful, but actually here I think they look chic and fabulous. Stylish and sophisticated. I’m on the thumbs up side.

These girls take themselves way too seriously…

They look like they’re wearing table cloths with a belt.

I think they look great! Especially Ashley. Modesty is cool woohoo!

Laurie on

They are dressed to the theme of the Gala.

Donna Jacobs on

I think they look incredible!

Its definitely an improvement compared to how they usually look, but this style is too matronly. They need to dress in styles more suited to their age.

Carrie on

I think they look amazing and unique and true to the theme in a world where celebs are showing way too much skin and a lack of originality. They have a unique spin on their own style and I love them for it.

I Love how they go to classy events dressed like they are going to a classy event. I can’t stand seeing all these females half naked on red carpets. They are not at a club for crying out loud! Ashley and Mary Kate have beautiful bodies and it’s nice to see young females not showing it off every chance they get.

Why can these 2 never dress their age and size. Best they ever dressed was on Full House.

Ryry on

They dress modestly and have their own style. A large number of women their age are trying to get attention by letting everything hang out. Sometimes it is in better taste to leave SOMETHING to the imagination. They are chic . . . and don’t really care what anyone thinks about their look.

I would like to thank Khalid for dumping me before my birthday.

Personally I think they look gorgeous, they compliment each other, their makeup & hair is simple, chic, the dresses ARE long & flow, but they are known for NOT showing all (like some people I won’t name)

They are horrendous and creepy.

Carter on

They look great! much better than the others who were half naked.

you don’t think all that material drowns the girls? ridiculous what is chic these days.

Why do the cute girls have to dress like Mrs.Roper on Threes Company. For you younger readers please google! They always have a scared look on there faces. That’s how readers eyes get when they see these young beautiful girls dressed like a 70 yr old women. They should be proud of their small body frames. Please quit hiding behind your Mrs Roper clothing!

Hideous as always, nothing to see here, AS ALWAYS!

I hate both looks. Ashley looks like a pilgrim. Mary Kate’s gown just had too many lines going every which way. They’re not old, I don’t know why they don’t dress more age appropriately. There are so many stylish fashions they could be wearing that would look fabulous on them! I would also love to see a real smiles on these girls. They aren’t walking the runway, and they aren’t Victoria Beckham, so I think they could lighten up a bit =o)

I think they did OK here. Better than usual!

They used to be so young and fresh, but the last decade seems to have turned them into spinster-looking drabs

MrsJAZ on

Both gowns are equally ugly and do absolutely nothing for them. Thankfully, they did comb their hair, so they looked somewhat better than usual.

Usually they look like bag people. So these dresses are terrific by comparison. More thumbs up than thumbs down.

They, themselves, look beautiful. Perfect hair, clean makeup, classic cheekbones. The dresses are hideous. Just once, at the same time, can’t they wear something pretty AND brush their hair?

They look fantastic! Beautiful makeup and the dresses suit them both!

Love Ashley’s whole look…..MK not so much

Angie on

Ooh they look so young, the dresses look little too old for them.

veronica on

Both look Great!! But I would like to see them in something fun and flirty as well.

It’s crazy when you look back to how fun and playful their style was when they were younger. They’re style’s evolved to something that seems a little too ahead of their years. Ashley’s style seems to be a bit more sophisticated and classic as opposed to Mary Kate who is about as mix-match as you can get. IDK, I mean I could say they look SO MUCH BETTER this year than some years past.
Overall, I’d say it’s an improvement.

I agree with Brittany. Those dresses are overwhelming for two such petite young women. The cuffs are too long, the look is too severe. They are drowning in fabric. They can afford the alterations. Lighten up, ladies.
