See Shailene Woodley's Tearful Reaction to Her Fault In Our Stars Haircut

Shailene Woodley may have a more relaxed approach to beauty than the rest of us (see, oh, everything she said in this post, up to and including “be pregnant with the world”), but even she is susceptible to some traditional beauty foibles — like being super-attached to her long hair.

In a just-released video from her August haircut for The Fault in Our Stars (in which she plays a cancer patient), you can watch as the stylist snips through Woodley’s super-thick, super-long ponytail — then keep watching to Woodley’s laughing-through-tears reaction as she sees the first chunk of hair to go.

“I have to see it, I have to see it,” she says, wincing, as the stylist holds up the pony. Then, covering her face, she says “I might cry so hard, you guys!” She avoids her reflection (“I’m so afraid to look!”) until the final chunk is cut off, but maintains her sense of humor the whole time, eventually posing with all four of the just-chopped ponytails (“hair nubbins,” as she called them) and making pretend mustaches with them. (She eventually donated the hair to Children With Hair Loss.)

She admitted in a blog post prior to cutting her hair that she felt overly attached to her long hair. “I finally came to the conclusion that hair, for me, was a symbol of strength … For the longest time, I was committed to never chopping it off,” she wrote. “Cut to: now. On Saturday, it will be the shortest it’s ever been. and I feel so relieved, so ready, so dedicated.”

And shortly after the cut, she was a convert. “I love it. It’s so easy, man,” she told PEOPLE. “Not having hair, the lack of hair, even the weight on your head, reveals so much about your body’s chemistry I cannot even tell you.”

Would you cry if you had to cut off all your hair? Have you donated hair before? Tell us in the comments!

It actually looks WAY better just like this with the short bob.

I’ve said it every time there’s an article on here about short hair (which is quite often)….most women look better with shoulder length or shorter hair.

Jaki on

Her long hair was ugly to begin with..

What a shame, she had gorgeous hair. She looks very ordinary with the short hair.

I love the bob. Hair longer than shoulder length gets to be boring. A bob is a nice change. It’ll grow back.

Please tell me that they did more than just cut her ponytail? She’s got some thick hair if they had to cut 4 chunks off. Glad she donated her hair tho. It’s an awesome little charity that most people wouldn’t even give a 2nd thought to.

didn’t she do this like months ago?!

As a cancer patient myself going thru chemo right now i have to say it’s the most devestating and humbling experience both at the same time. I’m also a hairstylist so, i’ve had my share of clients going thru cancer and my heart went out to them. Now, that i’m going thru it i can see both sides. To everyone who donates hair yes, it may be traumatic at first but, the look on a cancer patients face when they receive a wig from your donation should give u solace knowing it’s for a good cause

Hey, that’s Shin cutting her hair! Hands down the best stylist in LA. Go Shin!

Good for her; she looks great. I’ve donated my hair three times now, and I’ll do it again…but after my wedding next year!
