Nicole Richie on Her Purple Hair: It Feels No Different than When I Was Blonde

We’ve had a few weeks to get used to Nicole Richie‘s purple hair, and now we have to admit, it totally suits the star. Honestly, the style and beauty risk-taker can pull off just about anything, but when we caught up with her at the AOL Newfronts, we were curious if she’s as used to her lavender tresses as we are.

“Surprisingly, it feels like having blonde hair,” Richie told PEOPLE. “My colorist Danny Moon, when I talked to him about it, he said, ‘I’m telling you, you’re not going to feel that different. Having purple hair has the same hue as having blonde hair, and you’re not going to feel that different.’ And he was actually right.”

Purple hair enthusiasts should not get too attached to her vibrant shade. Richie might be changing it up before summer. “You know what — I didn’t even know I was going to have purple hair until two days before I had it so it’s hard for me to say if I’m going to have it for summer or not. But we’ll see.”

Richie was at the Newfronts promoting her web series #CandidlyNicole, which has sparked her new VH1 unscripted series by the same name. And she said that interaction from her fans on social media — her Twitter was voted by Time as one of the best celebrity accounts of 2013 — is key to the show’s success.

“When we choose the episodes, we go on my Twitter and we see what people are really responding to, what people want to know more about or dive into,” she explained. “The show is not me, telling people, ‘You have to listen to me, I know everything about everything.’ It’s me saying, ‘I have no idea about anything, and I don’t think you do either and let’s just go on this journey together because it’s just fun. And let’s learn about these things and laugh at the same time.'”

Maybe she’ll try another big hair change on her show. Can we get that started on Twitter? What should Richie do next? Do you like her purple hair? Tell us in the comments.

Absolutely nothing flattering about that…….

It doesn’t feel different?? No $hit. It’s hair, not a brain transplant.

The purple hair color makes her look like an old lady!

I actually think Nicole grew up to be a decent person … glad to see she grew out of Paris Hilton. Although I don’t dislike her, I don’t like her hair. And her comment sounds crazy – her hair is bright, wig-like purple! Blonde is just so tame by comparison. As for her right to do it – if she likes it, all the power to her.

You FEEL nothing different, but you LOOK like a rodeo clown…

that color is pitiful ! i dont like kelly osborne’s either. what is wrong with having normal hair color ? they are not teenagers anymore……..way past that.

Kate on

Uh…..weird

I think the purple hair makes her look very old. I like her best as a blond.

Karen on

She looks absolutely awful.

I can imagine the upkeep on this would be more difficult than everyday color. Doesn’t seem worth it….

Mellie on

Hate the purple. She looks much prettier as a blonde.

Lara on

She is just an odd looking person. Not ugly, not pretty, just odd.

Uh, to each her own!

Nicole, trust me you look weird with purple hair.

I actually think it’s really cute. I’m a 30 year old blonde, and recently asked my hair stylist about adding a few purple (more similar to Kelly Osborne’s purple) streaks to my hair. The only reason I didn’t do it is because she said it will fade very fast, so takes a lot of upkeep. …and I do t have the time or money for that. Otherwise I love the look. It’s just hair people, it grows back and can be changed in an instant. Not sure why everyone is always so uptight when others try something fun and funky out.

Oh my! You look like have gone back to your drug infested days when you and Paris were friends. Thought you were finally cleaning up your life. Now it appears you are having problems and are on something again. Hope your husband can save you one more time.

Ugly! I hate purple hair. I thought it was fun when I was 12. Lol!

Nicole, you are sooooo ugly…. no matter what hair color. you have..

That’s a big NO! It’s a good thing she doesn’t care what people think.

Are you humoring her or are your style critics just blind?

The tone of this hair totally contrasts with her natural skin tones. Violet is NOT a flattering colour for her and she’s just up and slopped it all around her face.

The result is as expected for a woman in her mid-30s. It makes her look very tired, brings out every skin imperfection and ages her so dramatically i thought she was her own mother for a second.

For those who are serious about colouring their hair, you NEED to know your skin’s temperature and tone before deciding on a shade. Nicole clearly has a very warm skin tone and these cool, icy shades wash her out and add 20 years to her face.

It’s a pretty color but honestly it looks weird on someone her age. It almost makes it seem like she’s trying to look younger but it backfired. What’s next? Mini skirts and band tees?
