Kate Has a Noteworthy Fashion Critic of Her Latest Memorable Coat: Prince William!

04/12/2014 at 01:38 PM ET

Fashionistas the world over admire the Duchess of Cambridge’s style choices. But she had one high-profile fashion critic during her stop in Cambridge, New Zealand Saturday: her husband, Prince William.

Wearing a green coat by Erdem for a series of engagements on their royal tour, she was cheered by a huge crowd of 15,000 well-wishers. Among them was Bev Hayes, 68, who met Kate. “I complimented her on her green dress. She said she liked it but Prince William thought it was a bit bright,” Hayes said.

Under her coat, Kate wore a green-and-white floral print silk dress by Suzannah with a ’30s inspired cut. Her favorite medium-heel black suede pumps and a matching clutch finished the look, and she continued to wear delicate studs (still no tiaras in sight!).

The couple were first seen in the town that carries their family and title name (Cambridge) on Saturday, April 12, at a war memorial. On the walkabout, Kate was also taken aback by rather eye-catching replica ornament of her holding her son when they left hospital.

It belonged to Pam McCaroll, 74, from Kati Kati, who is a devoted royalist with more than 1,000 items of memorabilia in her collection. McCaroll, who had driven an hour and a half and waited more than five hours to see the couple, showed Kate the $80 ornament. “Oh my goodness,” she said, “is that me?!” McCaroll said. “I think she thought I was offering it to her but I told her that it was the pride of my collection. I love the royal family, the history and the continuity. When I was younger I used to pretend I was the Queen and stand on our veranda waving.”

Earlier, Kate had visited a hospice while William was at Pacific Aerospace where he unveiled the world’s most versatile aircraft — the Mark III P-750. On his first solo engagement of the tour, he spent 30 minutes touring the company’s HQ with CEO Damian Camp. And the former RAF helicopter pilot prince revealed that he no longer flies as much as would like. “He said he’s still doing some flying but not as much as he would like. He said he would come back and do a flight in the Mark III. He seemed very impressed with the take off,” Camp told reporters.

William received presents during the visit, including a miniature rugby ball for Prince George as well as rugby shirts from the local team, the “Chiefs,” for himself and Kate. “He talked about how George has settled into a nice routine and how he is keeping Mum and Dad on their toes,” added Camp. “He said George has got to the stage where he’s interacting now and keeping them busy.” As Kate told Alison Pizzini, 75, a former midwife who complemented her on baby George: “He can be a bit of a handful sometimes!”

Are you surprised that William weighs in? What do you think of her latest look?

so much education wasted. at least the kardashians own businesses and create a life for themselves. these kids live off public money and she does nothing but take pictures. nice, but misguided. would never want her life for daughter of my own.

Much education wasted??? Are you kidding me, EDUCATION is NEVER, EVER wasted. To learn is to evolve and as far as living of the “public money”, Sam, please educate yourself.

Ummmm the last time I check I think the Obamas are like William and Kate and I think the Obamas waste more of the american dollars than anyone I know

Sam- you realize that the prince is quite wealthy from his inheritance from his mother, right? Additionally, the Dutchess is known for reusing outfits, sharing with her mom and sister, and being frugal with what she purchases with their money. There will be some public expenses, but this couple is pretty down to earth considering who they are

Sam you should also realize you only see the highlights. These people work tirelessly behind the scenes. While they are “paid” to be a royal family their real wealth comes from their labors. You don’t grow and maintain wealth with a wasted education.

Sam has issues and should be in therapy. Sam, seek help

Sam, The kardashians money started from a released sex tape. Are you suggesting the Royals go wild!

@aw … Shame on you. The level of disgusting hatred and disrespect people think they are allowed against the president of the United States has gotten out of hand. And the amount of ignorance about the role the POTUS plays; only a moron would equate the Obama’s to Will and Kate.

Sam, the royals with all of the traditions that they uphold with their various activities, tirelessly undertaken in the name of their country, attract many millions if not billions of tourist dollars to their country every year.

President and First Lady also work tirelessly to better the lives of Americans in various ways, including running the country and modeling behaviors that might help people.

You really need to educate yourself instead of posting ignorant remarks on internet forums.

education is definitely a waste if you have no enlightenment at the end of your studies. if she really had some guts she would neither have made her young child a prop in her tour , nor would she be gratified just dressing up and collecting flowers. she should cultivate a hobby , create a business, write a book something other than just show up.
