Kate‘s signature style rule? Find what works and stick with it.

The Duchess of Cambridge wore designs from two of her go-to designers for yesterday’s Royal Tour events — though she did stir up a little bit of chatter on Twitter with her glossy high ponytail (not normally a look she wears) at a daytime event in the town of Blenheim.

The Duchess’s belted crepe Alexander McQueen coat fit the bill for the occasion: a public wreath-laying ceremony at a local war memorial, followed by a visit to the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre.

The cornflower-blue coat featured a sharply tailored silhouette, utility pockets and a pleated back skirt. The British label’s pre-spring/summer collection includes a similar belted crepe coat in black, which retails for $3,995. (Alexander McQueen Creative Director Sarah Burton has created several designs for the Duchess, including her royal wedding gown and the ensemble she wore to the christening of Prince George.) Kate paired the piece with sapphire-and-diamond earrings, navy pumps and a small poppy brooch.

Hours later, Kate gave royal fashion followers their first taste of nighttime glamour, changing into a bespoke black Jenny Packham dress for a State Reception hosted by the Governor General. The fitted LBD was embellished with hand-stitched silver beading in a silver fern pattern, a motif that represents New Zealand’s national emblem.

At the reception, Kate helped unveil a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II sporting the diamond fern brooch she was was gifted on a 1953 trip to New Zealand — and which the Queen has loaned to Kate for this royal tour (see her wearing it on Day 1 below).

Known as the royal recycler thanks to her habit of re-wearing her designer dresses, so far Kate has debuted new looks at each of her Royal Tour appearances.

Next up, she’ll get casual when she and Prince William go head-to-head in a sailing contest on Auckland harbor. Bring on the skinny jeans!

Hate the below the knee look. Boring.

Not a fan of her style of clothing, for the most part. Why the need to tell us the cost? The majority of us can’t, or wouldn’t pay those kinds of prices for am outfit

that is something the Queen would wear….boring

I agree – the hem length is a bit too long for her – she was wearing her skirts too short which emphsized that her legs were really thin – but this is too long – MID KNEE KATE!

Love the outfits. Agree that they’re too long but clearly that was at the request of the queen. She never went below the knee before. I wish the queen would back off and realize it’s not the same as when she was young.

I miss her days of wearing jeans and sweaters!

Her style is safe and appropriate for her position. As lovely as she is, I have to say that she looks about 10 years older than she is. I wish she would update her hair.

I like both of these outfits. Very tailored, classic and simple. I agree about the hem length – they could be shorter, but her skirts before were way too short (especially some of her pregnancy outfits)! Her hair pulled back looks great. When her hair is down she is constantly playing with it, pulling it off her face. I agree with one of the previous posts – she needs to update her hair.

I think she always looks fabulous! She has amazing style and class. I love her clothes, she dresses appropriately for her duties!
