Plus-Size Blogger Marie Denee on Trying Spring's Trickiest Trends: 'Don't Knock it Until You Rock it'

04/10/2014 at 03:19 PM ET

Spring is officially here, coats are parked in the closet and hemlines are rising. And we’re beyond excited about the spring trends heading our way: brights, florals, prints and so many good shoes. Many of the trends are tricky to try, but just-relaunched plus size line Eloquii teamed up with Curvy Fashionista blogger Marie Denee to show just how wearable — and fun! — these styles can be.

Like our new blogger Allison Teng, Denee’s approach to fashion is fearless. “I stare at it,” Denee tells PEOPLE when asked how she approaches a trend that she finds challenging. “I am no longer afraid and have learned to ‘Don’t Knock It Until You Rock It.’ You will never know how it will really look and feel until you give it a whirl. Then you can say, ‘You know what, it wasn’t for me.’ Until then, give it a shot!”

For more out-there trends, “I first have to see how curious I am about it — like culottes for example,” she says. “I am so intrigued by these and can already imagine a few ways to make this work. Also, I do find it easier to dabble in the fast fashion designers [like Boohoo Plus and Asos Curve] so this way I am not wasting any money on a trend that might not last or that I may not really enjoy.”

With that, Denee picked Eloquii dresses she’s loving, and though they all seem fairly different, she does look for some things consistently when choosing clothes. “I look for variety. I need to be able to wear this item at least two ways and more than once,” she says. “Then I look at fit and fabric. I am honest with myself and if I find that an item needs umpteen alterations or it is dry clean only, I have to really love it. And finally, I don’t care what size the tag says, I need for it to fit me impeccably. So I buy the size that fits me best at this time in life and leave it at that!”

First up: A floral print dress in a scuba fabric. “Since I gravitate towards a more masculine or hard contrast with feminine, this dress spoke to me. Add to it that it’s is a scuba material, I felt like I was making such a fun and bold statement,” she says. The next dress, a print fit-and-flare recently seen on Melissa McCarthy, “I loved the pattern and the way the blocking hit the shape of the curve,” she says. “And the way it can go day to night seamlessly? Yes!”

And the pink dress got points for its cool neckline. “It’s a unique shape in a dress that I haven’t seen in other plus-size options, and I loved the way it hugged me. I can see myself playing this up or down for a brunch, blogger event or date! There are options here!” she says. “Paired with a blazer, it can be professional, but that is not my life! I am all about the stiletto stacked rings and bracelets and bold earrings here! I feel unapologetically sexy.”

She also loved the striped dress, which she called “flirty and playful with an edge.” All of the dresses caught her attention for ease of wear, though: “I’ve pushed myself to rock more separates, but I keep gravitating to dresses. At least I am no longer in all maxis as I have tended to be in the past!”

Denee credits her confident attitude to her pal Jenae Jones of Riot on the Runway. “She has been kicking me in my behind to step out of my box … I have taken more risks, played up the assets, and stared interesting trends in the face,” she said. “With plus size fashion making strides, there are now more than ever, new silhouettes that are on trend and ready to buy now, just like our straight size sisters. I think [the key] is finding a rule to break: No prints. No horizontals. No body-hugging. No loud colors. No arms. No Legs. Find a rule and own it!”

Now that’s advice we’d give to anyone. What do you think of the way Denee styled these outfits? See any favorite dresses? Tell us below!

I have been following Marie Denee on Facebook (the Curvy Fashionista) for about a month. I am so happy to see her team up with StyleWatch for this article as it is one of my favorite fashion magazines, and hope to see more collaborations in the future! I have been eying the striped dress for a bit, and may break down and try it. Thanks, Marie and StyleWatch!

I am excited to see Ms. Curvy Fashionista, Marie Denee “Rocking” these awesome styles by Eloquii! I love them all, but the black and white striped dress is Super Hot! I agree, Step Outside The Box, you might just find something new and amazing!

She’s wearing some great dresses but my favorite is the Print Fit-and-Flare look. Adding the metallic heels took the dress to another level.

Marie looks Ahhh-mazing!! I love that she has decided to break all of the pre-existing fashion rules for plus size women. Perfect looks for Spring! My fave is the bold and bright pink!
