Royal Tour Style Update: Kate's Tory Burch Dress Sells Out Within Hours
The Kate Effect strikes again! The dress worn by the Duchess of Cambridge during her appearance at the first event on the Royal Tour has already sold out.
Kate selected the Tory Burch “Paulina” dress when she, Prince William and Prince George paid a visit to Wellington’s Government House to meet with new mothers and their babies at an event for the Plunket Society. Though many had predicted that Kate — an ambassador for British fashion who often wears clothes made by designers from the country she’s visiting — would wear something from an Antipodean label, the Duchess instead chose a graphic-print, fringed-hem knit dress by American designer Tory Burch.
Even before news agencies began posting photos from the event, royal fashion followers took to Twitter to share retail details on the dress, which is from Burch’s Resort 2014 collection. Within minutes came reports that the dress was selling out fast at luxury shopping site netaporter.com.
By 6:30 EST only sizes XS and XL were still available on the designer’s website, where it was on sale for $237 (original price: $450). Minutes later, the remaining inventory had been snapped up.
This isn’t the first time Kate has caused a fashion frenzy. Everything from the Issa dress she wore for her engagement announcement to her trusty L.K. Bennett nude pumps have become instant must-haves. Fortunately for legions of “Copy Kates,” dozens of Duchess wardrobe changes lay ahead in the coming days.
