Mindy Kaling: I May Wear a Sari Next

“To me, when Indian women wear saris there’s a little patch of skin [under your bra] that many women can [show] without feeling self-conscious. It’s alluring without being too revealing” she told PEOPLE at a Bliss Spa event revealing her “Mindy-cure” to celebrate her show The Mindy Project. “I don’t have like a six-pack or anything but I can wear it and show it off. And I liked that even though that wasn’t an Indian inspired outfit at all, that sort of revealed that same sort of patch of skin that Indian women do traditionally all the time. It made me want to wear a sari, actually.”
The actress has been on a style streak lately, wearing gorgeous custom-made gowns by her Mindy Project designer Salvador Perez to the CDGA Awards and Oscars afterparty, the latter of which is her favorite recent red carpet moment. “Black was the only thing about it that was simple: It was strapless, it had peplum, it had a train, it was sparkly and beaded but still looked elegant,” she says. “I would never wear that kind of dress unless it was made for me. I just loved it.”
Any dresses lately she’s loved less? Kaling shows why she’s such a class act by politely dodging the question. “I never like to look back, and make a designer, who has been generous to me, feel bad about what they lent me or that I didn’t love it,” she says. “Everything that I wear that is lent to me looks amazing, [but] sometimes I wore the wrong hair and makeup or didn’t sell it the best way that I could.”
