Mindy Kaling Goes Wild in the Vogue Closet and More From Her Photoshoot

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West may have gotten everyone’s attention with their splashy Vogue debut, but for our money, the best part of the fashion mag’s April issue isn’t on the cover — it’s inside. Mindy Kaling makes her first appearance in the pages of Vogue, though if the below video is any indication, it may be her last.
In the hilarious clip, Kaling models a “very young Laura Bush” outfit for her photoshoot and tries hard to hide her disappointment with the sweater-and-dress ensemble. “I like my outfit too. What I lack in loving it, I make up for in respecting it,” she says, while attempting to spice it up with things she finds around the Vogue closet. As the fashion editors reach the end of their ropes, Kaling picks up high-fashion helmets, oversized watches, furry vests and more. (Spoiler: She loses the battle.)
In the Vogue article, Kaling takes writer Sandra Ballentine shopping, talks about her favorite designers (Marni and Miu Miu) and explains her fashion and body philosophy. “When I’m at my thinnest, I tend to wear things that don’t show off my body,” she says. “But when I’m bigger, I’ll go body-con, which comes from a place of ‘This is my perimeter, in case you were wondering if I was actually much bigger.'”
For lots more on Kaling’s style (including quotes like, “I love when your clothes can help you project that you’re witty — you know, when your outfit does some of the work for you.”) check out Vogue.com or pick up the new issue on stands March 31.
