Keira Knightley: My Wedding Dress Is 'Quite Impressively Splattered' With Red Wine (Plus: Check Out Her New Chanel Ad!)

Need even more proof that Keira Knightley isn’t like most brides when it comes to her wedding dress? Not only has she found plenty of opportunities to wear the Chanel confection, but she also didn’t flinch when it ended up covered in red wine on its most recent outing.

“It’s now got red wine spilled down the front because the last time I wore it my friend [knocked my arm] and now it’s everywhere,” she told the U.K.’s Telegraph (she’s pictured in the dress above with husband James Righton at a December gala). “I didn’t quite realize the extent of it until I got home. It’s quite impressively splattered. But, hey, a good night is a good night and when a dress has had its time, maybe it’s had its time. I’m pretty sure I can get it out but, if I can’t, I’m happy with the memory of a good night and the story of how the dress got destroyed.”

She also explains why she chose to rewear an old dress for her wedding, rather than plucking a brand new gown off the runway or requesting something custom from her good friend, Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld. “I’d worn the dress lots. It was my something old. And I liked not making a big deal about it,” she said. “I just wanted to be in something I had had a great time in, something I would have a great time in again.”

Her laid-back attitude also applies to her job as the face of Coco Mademoiselle. For some ads (like the one below), she wore gorgeous, sparkling couture gowns; for others, she went a little more casual, wearing a Chanel jacket and her own overalls (“dungarees” to the British Knightley). “I love dungareesI wear the dungarees so much that I’ve now got three pairs, because it was getting to the point where I was like, ‘You have to wash them, Keira.’ And I’m really into Doc Martens at the moment. I think I’ve decided to become my eight-year-old self again, because when I was eight that was all that I wore – dungarees and Doc Martens.”

What do you think of the star’s low-key approach to fashion? Would you freak if your wedding dress were covered in wine?

I like her attitude about the dress, at the end of the day it’s only a dress after all. The marriage is and should be more important.

That and she has tons of money so she can always buy another! I would have the same attitude if I could afford to buy more than one wedding gown in a lifetime.

Tina on

I love her attitude. Getting married should be about the person you are committing yourself to, not worrying about a perfect dress or flowers or just the right reception. I love how she knows its just a dress – not a symbol.

I love her.

She’s so refreshingly down-to-earth. I remember seeing a picture of her literally skipping on her wedding day and it was so adorable.

I just love her laid-back approach to the situation.

I got married in a 2 piece knit St. John dress. Wore it many, many times and gave it away when it had outlasted its usefulness. It’s just a dress. Keira’s got the right attitude.

Marching to the beat of her own drum. I love her and IMO Keira is a fantastic actor and absolutely beautiful. That dress is already a classic no matter if she can get the stain out or not. Bravo Keira.

I just love her attitude about it. Why is it British people just seem more practical and take things in stride? And I’m an American! Another option she could do with the dress is dye it a similar shade as the wine if the material is conducive to it.

Love her attitude about the dress. I think it’s ridiculous to rush out and spend thousands of dollars on a dress to wear a few hours and then stuff in a box. Such a total waste of money.
