Katie Holmes Speaks Out About Holmes & Yang Ending: 'I'm Concentrating on Acting and Motherhood'

Katie Holmes Holmes & YangSplash News Online

Many fashionistas were surprised to hear of the sudden demise of Holmes & Yang, Katie Holmes’s five-year-old clothing line with her stylist Jeanne Yang. Despite the line’s increasingly high profile, landing high-fashion spreads and and a spot at New York Fashion Week, the split had apparently been a long time coming.

At the time, insiders speculated about the reason Holmes and Yang ended their partnership, but the two key players were staying silent. Now, Holmes has spoken to Elle UK about the split. “I loved every minute of my time working on Holmes & Yang. I remain passionate about the design aesthetic we created, and am so happy with what Jeanne and I accomplished,” she said. “However I am now concentrating on acting and motherhood, which did not leave the label the time and attention it deserved. I’m really thrilled that the final showcase for Holmes & Yang is in Elle — I had a blast at my shoot for the magazine. It is fantastic to feel like it’s ending on a high.”

Yang declined to comment to PEOPLE, but last week, a source shared some insight with us. “They have different approaches to absolutely everything: how to run the company, how to promote it and how to handle the press,” the source said. “The conflict isn’t about any one thing, it’s sort of about everything.”

What do you think of Holmes’s explanation? Are you sorry to see Holmes & Yang go?

Let’s hope she is a better mother than actress.

Andrea on

Hate to say it but she probably had a better chance with the fashion line than acting. I know it’s mean to say, but it just seems like it would’ve been wise to keep on with the fashion line since she was already successful with that.

An opinion on

Holmes’ explanation was classy; Yang’s ‘source’ explanation was not.

Kate on

‘Cause she herself has awful style sense and her clothing line sucked?

Jennifer on

What about it just wasn’t profitable….

Lisa on

FWIW to poster below “An opinion” Holmes’ explanation my seem more classy, yet I expect that Yang’s source is probably more accurate. You don’t end a good thing for the bs reason she gave…playing the mother card to lessen the criticism

MidwestMom on

I always wondered if Tom financially backed the company and when they parted, his support stopped, which led to closing the line. Stars have many business ventures going on at once, I don’t believe Katie’s excuse. If it was profitable and viable, it would continue.

I’m sure Katie is a very kind person and mother, and kudos to her for leaving what looked like a sad and stifling situation when she was married to Tom. However, she to me has always been nothing but a beautiful face. She looked great in the Bobbi Brown ads, etc. that seemed to be her thing, but the girl can’t act, or sing, and due to the negative reviews from her fashion line, doesn’t know fashion either. I think people WANT to compare her to Nicole Kidman and WANTED her to rise out of the bad marriage ashes like a Phoenix and dominate Hollywood and win an Oscar, but that would require having an innate natural talent like Nicole does. I’m sorry but Katie just doesn’t have that. She can try all she wants which is a lot more than most of us can say, but no matter what role she attempts or song/dance routine she does, she just doesn’t have it. She was cute on Dawson’s Creek, but to have a long career in this business or any business you have to challenge yourself and have the skills to back it up.

Just from what I saw, it wasn’t a good line and was overpriced. I think while some may call Katie’s statement ‘classy’, I think it’s just a smoke screen and I am inclined to go with Yang’s “source”. You don’t walk away if it’s a great line and you have a great partnership. The fact that Yang isn’t coming forward and backing up Katie speaks volumes. If I were Katie, I’d have stuck with motherhood and clothing line, I’m not a fan of her ‘acting’.

To those saying other celeb’s do numerous things, do you actually know if they are involved in everything they have their name on? Who cares why she quit it. It is her choice to do.

Does anybody else notice the difference on how she looked when she was with Tom and now that she is on her own she looks like the normal Katie Holmes. There were times I would not recognize her with all the fancy clothes and all the make up when she was with Tom she looks happier that she be herself.

I like Katie and enjoyed seeing her on Broadway. I hope she does more plays because the movie roles she gets aren’t really all that interesting.

Gina on

Tom Cruise was instrumental in helping Katie get this going behind the scenes. Wonder if that had something to do with it too.

I am sure she is set for life with the divorce settlement so I doubt she even needs to work. I think she is a fair actress. She will find work because she has a Meg Ryan appeal. Girl next door appeal. I do not see her getting big roles, but I do see her finding work…

CF98 on

What divorce settlement? All she got was child support and fully custody of Suri.

She signed a prenup.

I agree she ended it because it wasn’t profitable but how many people would admit that? I don’t see an issue with her response. Its not like she insulted anyone.

Having been in the fashion business for over 25 years I know how hard it is to actually make money – even if you put in 15 hour days. Most “celebrity lines” are totally done by others – the
celebrities merely show up for fittings, a little input here and there, and expect to reap big rewards. It’s just not so. Ms.Holmes probably expected a better return for her investment
and just decided to pull the plug on a line that really wasn’t that special or interesting. Of course, like a politician, she has to declare she wants to “spend more time with her family”, which is usually a cope-out. Hope her acting career is more durable than her fashion career.

thumbelina on

katie was better off staying with tom. her career’s been a mess since she left him, and her life choices too. i used to be such a huge fan of hers cause she seemed to know what was good for her to get her name out there for her career. sad to see her burning bridges left and right now.

Kristan on

I have nothing personal against Katie. I bet she is a great mom. But she’s not a good actress and she really doesn’t have much style. She always seems somewhat in a hurry and just not well styled (hair pieces always hanging out, etc). She’s “cute”… nothing sexy about her. I don’t know… she just seems like the neighbor lady/girl next door. Nothing special .. just average.

Kimberly on

Concentrate on motherhood, because you sure can’t act.

Donna on

Translation: I was as horrible at clothing design as I was at acting.

Bill on

Would she even have a clothes line without being Tom Cruises’ ex? She would be begging for guest appearances on TV Land. Alyssa Milana lite.

Bill on

I like how Cruise gets balmed for everything. Who put a gun to this dime-a-dozen starlet’s head to marry him? Everyone applauds her for getiing out of their marriage but, of course, give her no criticism for marrying the guy in the first place. He was the same guy from beginning to end.

Bill on

Is she letting her daughter walk yet or still carrying her around like a sack of potatoes?

sarahGrier on

Well nothing lasts more than 5 years with this woman! … Marriage…. Clothing line…..even Dawson’s Creek (1998-2003)! There’s something wrong with the attitude of this woman probably!

Guest on

I don’t know anything or should I say I never saw her fashion line. As for dropping it for motherhood and acting…well that’s a whole nother story. In my book she should have stayed with fashion. Acting isn’t her strongest attribute. In other words she isn’t talented as an actress…one has to wonder if she was a talent in the fashion field?

vincenza8907 on

I didn’t even know she had a clothing line… and was she really concentrating on acting because I have not seen her in anything.

PS on

Notice how much more articulate and intelligent Holmes sounds now that she doesn’t have to filter her words through the Mouth of Sauron – oh, sorry, I meant Tom Cruise and his Scientology cronies.

Laurie on

I hope Jeanne moves forward with another line. She was clearly the brains and design behind the brand and I think she’s extremely talented.

young_voter on

Katie looks good but we all know that Tommie has already been there.

jabba on

You cannot sell awful ugly clothing, I saw some of the line in Barney’s and it was ridiculous, un stylish, not worth hundreds of dollars at all, no wonder, they had to dump it, it was not selling! Katie has a pretty face but her own style is horrible, she is usually a mismatched mess the times I’ve seen her.

Vida on

I always believed Tom set her up with it as a distraction from their fake miserable marriage.
Once that dissolved, naturally would the line.
Not to mention most of it was dreadfully dull & panned by the true fashion press.

Jenb64 on

She seems sweet, like a great mom, too. Gotta give her endless points for getting Suri and herself out of Tom’s everyday clutches. But as for acting…..she is probably not any better than the next guy. Put it this way, I would much rather watch Jessicas Alba and Biel act than Katie. Milk toast.

As for the clothing line, I spent time online looking at her last year’s offerings. Just plain basic clothing for crazy prices. White standard blouse: $300. Black skirt: $700. People had to be buying it just for the name or status.

Oh, Katie, as much as I like you I get tired of seeing pics with that crooked smile of yours, which seemed to materialize as part of Tommy Boy’s make-over of you a lá his couch jumping era. It looks weird and creepy, so please stop it. As for your clothing line, interchangeabke with Target. Better to focus on your little one: start with trash-canning all of the tot’s red lipsticks and tap dance heeled nary janes, and through out all her janky fur coats. Lastly, get her out in the sunshine. She’s an adorable child but probably in need of some play time (choosing my words carefully, as Tom is known to sometimes sue when his wee tot and he are discussed. Happy, Tom?)

Maybe Katie’s statement appears to be surface material at first glance, but the woman appears to have gone through a huge transformation the past couple of years. It makes sense that she’s making deeply intentional choices for herself these days. Choosing to do other things sounds normal in this context.
