Shailene Woodley: I Only Wear Used Clothes Unless It's For Work

It’s no secret that Shailene Woodley marches to the beat of her own drummer, stylewise, as she shows when she wears wet hair or five-finger running shoes on the red carpet. And we’d expect nothing less from the down-to-earth star, who just told The Hollywood Reporter “My religion is the Earth, man. I believe in trees.”

In the magazine’s cover story, Woodley clarifies her position on balancing her eco soul with the needs of the red carpet, further setting her apart from other starlets her age — but in a good way. “I exclusively buy used clothes,” she says in the interview. “I’m going to be a citizen of this planet, and I’m going to do my responsibility and live in stride with nature instead of constantly fighting against her.”

But when she’s on the clock promoting a film — as she is now for Divergent — she’s willing to be flexible (to a point: you won’t see her in fur or diamonds). “If I was to show up wearing my five-toe shoes, my Melodia organic leggings and some hippie top, no one is going to take me seriously,” she says. “When I go on a red carpet, I’m Shailene, but I’m also Shailene representing a movie. I’m there for my boss, for my employer, so part of that comes with wearing the uniform.”

You won’t see her wearing much in the way of jewelry, though. At Sundance, she wore just a Navajo pendant, which she explained to the magazine: “It’s my way of just recognizing spirit — as hippie as that may sound — in an industry where sometimes materialism is the main focus. It’s kind of my way of grounding and remembering what’s important to me.”

That’s how I’d be if I was a movie star…

Yup, no diamonds, used clothes…….but she’ll jet back and forth ten times in a week to make an extra buck. Shailene, I know you’re young so I’ll cut you some slack, but when you start taking buses and trains to get around LA, and you “economize” your trips across the country and world to accommodate “Mother Earth”, only then will what you say be taken seriously, until then, you’re a mere “POSER”!

This child is about as obnoxious and grating as anyone can get. I remember being a know-it-all teenager, too, but thank God no one was taking down and disseminating the moronic garbage that came out of my big mouth every five minutes. And worse, that anybody would have taken my arrogance seriously and actually listened to the drivel I spouted. This girl needs to be taken down from her high horse and maybe then she’d grow out of her narcissism cloaked in typical Hollywood, holier-than-thou “do-gooderness”. For your own good, girl, just shut up!

Really? She is obnoxious or a poser because she’s not meeting your standard of a conscientious person? Get over your selves. Sounds to me like she is a strong, clear-minded woman who acknowledges the awkward place her career puts her in but still tries to do her part. Have you done the same? #meangirls

5 FINGER shoes? Come on People, who is doing your proof reading?

I’m with Athena. Shailene acknowledges that not everything she does is perfect, but she does the best she can. Everyone picks and chooses their battles. At the end of the day, the intentions are there.

Perhaps, Susan and ProudAmericanWoman, when you stop cutting other people down, *YOU* will be taken seriously. It’s always easier to point the finger at someone else than reflect on oneself. (And as for holier-than-thou attitudes… She’s not telling anyone else how to live their lives, so maybe you shouldn’t either.)
