Julia Roberts's Beauty Team On Her Blonde Hair and Oscars Look
No, you didn’t need to adjust your screens; yes, Julia Roberts was blonde at the Oscars. Her longtime stylist Serge Normant says she didn’t make the change for any big reason — she just felt it was time. “We had planned to go lighter. She has been blonde before,” Normant tells PEOPLE. “We love the ombré feel but we just went for a really light color. It still has a little gold and dimension, but not as definite as dark roots and light ends. We didn’t want it to be one color, but [there's] less of a contrast.”
And the new do even affected how makeup artist Genevieve Herr did Roberts’s makeup that evening. Though Roberts asked for a “beautiful eye,” Herr kept things light because of the “beautiful blonde color” of Roberts’s hair, she says. “I took that into consideration. For the eyes, black would be a little bit too much for blonde hair, so that’s why I decided to use brown, to make it look softer.”
Then Normant wove Roberts’s hair into the relaxed, pretty low twist she wore to the Oscars Sunday, where she was nominated for best supporting actress. “It was slightly ’30s inspired,” says Normant, who spent forty five minutes styling the star. “It’s very loose, with a side part, and a very loose wave in the front. The rest is very piled up in the back in a messy bun. It’s uneven. It’s messy, deconstructed.”
Normant, who used his Meta Revive Dry Conditioner on her hair beforehand, says the look was a blend of effort and effortlessness. “At the Oscars you don’t want to be uptight, but at the same time it’s the Oscars,” says Normant. “You want the look to have a little extra elegance. It felt glamorous without being overdone. I think she was happy with it.”
Says Herr, “[Roberts] went into her dress, then she looked at the whole look and said, “Thank you guys, you made me look so beautiful.” She was happy, she was happy and comfortable. That makes us feel very nice.”
