After her hair trial Friday, Anna Kendrick had us expecting a romantic, curly updo to go with a dramatic dress. So we have to hand it to her for keeping us on our toes, arriving on the Oscars red carpet with a sleek, simple updo to go with her modern, sheer J. Mendel dress. Toni & Guy Hair Meets Wardrobe’s global brand ambassador Mark Hampton followed up with us to let us know how the big night went.
First things first: The hair was a huge hit. “Everyone said as she left that they were very thankful. Her clothing stylist was like, ‘I’m so glad, you did such a great job, she looks really amazing’ and it was really nice. But it was always going to look amazing on Anna, wasn’t it?” he says.
He first met Kendrick when she was wearing jeans and a sweater, though she showed him gown photos to help him envision a good look for the dress. And when he saw the final product, he was blown away as well. “It made her look so beautiful!” he says. “It’s nice the way you see somebody in their sweatpants and then you see them in their ballgown looking amazing.”
Though it was drizzling, Hampton said he didn’t add anything additional to keep her hair in place. He used the line’s Volume Plumping Mousse for hold and worked through the Volume Plumping Whip for “a matte finish, not too shiny.”
So how long does it take to twist Kendrick’s hair into a sleek, not-too-shiny bun? “Probably longer than normal only because I can’t get her to sit still,” he tells PEOPLE. “There’s lots of stuff going on, you don’t have like solid time!”
What did you think of the look Kendrick finished with? Were you a fan? Tell us in the comments!
