Winona Ryder's Style Confession: 'I've Worn Dresses to the Oscars That I Got for $10'

Winona Ryder was a red carpet staple at the Academy Awards in the 1990s (she was nominated for back-to-back awards in ’94 and ’95). And while most stars work with a stylist and undergo several fittings to find the perfect dress for their Oscars moments, Ryder reveals that she took a totally different approach.

“Most of my wardrobe is vintage, and I’ve worn dresses to the Oscars that I got for $10,” Ryder tells the U.K.’s Red magazine in its April issue. “Sean Penn’s last Haiti gala, I wore this vintage dress that I’d worn to a film premiere in 2005. I know that’s kind of a no-no in the fashion world, but why wear something just once if you love it?”

And though she’s partial to vintage finds in her everyday life, she looks equally comfortable in high-fashion ensembles, sporting a statement-making Louis Vuitton top, a structured Saint Laurent tux and an embellished John Rocha dress and Miu Miu jacket (below) for her shoot with the magazine.

Fashion choices aside, the 42-year-old actress also gets candid about a tumultuous time in her life. “My early thirties were rough. I went through stuff that I would have gone through, and probably should have gone through much younger, but I had spent my twenties working,” she explains. “Even when I was the right age for older roles, people thought of me as being younger. It was tough because I’d had so much success in my early twenties.”

She doesn’t age…at all! She’s just as pretty now as she was in her 20’s!

Pam on

Is she sure she paid for them at all? Lol jk. She looks great! She looks like Natalie Portman in the bottom picture.

donnatex on

I would have thought she just “lifted” them. lol!

Penny on

Seriously! This woman is still so beautiful! I know she hit a rough patch several years ago but at least it looks like she has taken care of herself. She’s beautiful!

Lola on

She is so gorgeous! Please someone give her a great movie role!

Hot on

My first thought was if the dresses cost $10 is that the price for the gas she used to go to the store and shoplift?

rachel on

She really doesn’t age! And she does look like Natalie Portman in the last photo. Glad she made it through that rough patch. I would really love to see her in more movies again — she’s a very talented actress. I watch Little Women every year over the Thanksgiving holiday. It’s my favorite movie of hers.

Katrina on

42? She really hasn’t aged

Andrea on

She probably switched out the tags. Why are we praising this woman, who was caught stealing from an upscale department store?

Guest on

Vintage spelled incorrectly in third paragraph. Hmmm ….. I’ve noticed numerous articles have typos lately.

Karolina on

She’s 42?! This woman is ageless! She looks absolutely gorgeous. I would really like to see her in more roles.

First an article on Drew Barrymore, now Winona Ryder … Two of my favorites from the 80’s and 90’s! I just watched Reality Bites the other day, for the millionth time … one of my fave Winona movies.
P.S. to Andrea … get over the whole shoplifting thing. It was ages ago and everyone else has.

Andrea, “S/he who is WITHOUT sin, caste the first stone.”

Tigs on

Loved her in Black Swan

Tigs on

oops, thought that was Natalie Portman

Driane on

I read these boards and I’m amazed at the number of mean spirited people. It’s been years people. Give her a chance

rachel on

@an opinion — I was about to write the exact same thing. Everyone has sinned. Some bigger than others, but no one is perfect.

Katie on

Matt Damon must be one weird dude to have live with her for 3 years.

Steacy on

My God- do you people get over nothing?

CatW on

she looks amazing, love her and glad she is coming back :)

Cindy on

Wow! She’s beautiful!! Glad to see she’s doing well!

HKT on

This is one that has gotten more and more beautiful with age. Good on her.

HKT on

This is one that just gets more and more gorgeous as time passes, and I say good on her. I have always loved her in everything she’s been in.

Samantha on

She looks so damn good for 42 . . Love her with the long hair . .8

Jm on

What a pretty lady. She looks lovely. How quaint to be your own stylist and wear inexpensive vintage dresses. She seems a bit more down to earth than other actresses.

Kat on

I think it’s so funny how we decide we “like” or dislike celebrities solely based upon how they come off in the media. My sister works as a scenic and tells me how they behave when nobody is looking and it’s usually appalling.

She worked with Wynona on The Crucible and said she would constantly yell at the young kids who were cast as extras if they were too noisy, telling them to shut the F up. She was demanding and extremely rude to the crew.

Anyone with that much wealth that steals clothing an gets caught has some bad karma. I don’t think we should pity her.

Noonie on

I love, love, love Winona. She made some mistakes, has paid for them and is getting back into films. Ahem, anyone remember Robert Downey Jr. and all his drug nonsense? If he can clean his act up and be forgiven, then Winona is overdue. She’s a lovely, fine actress who needs higher profile roles. You go, Winona!

Ale on

Some people here are just idiots. How long ago did she shoplift? she made a mistake, everybody makes mistakes. Can you imagine being reminded about something you did years ago on a daily basis? Get over yourselves and get a life of your own.

Hotgal on

She’s aging very well indeed, still as pretty as a girl in her 20s. But what happen to her family – boyfriend/spouse/kids? It’s time to get cracking with that Winona.

Nicole on

I think this is the best she has looked in years.

Yo-Yo on

Wow! People really can’t let the past go. Forget that she’s turned her life around in an amazing way. She’s always gonna be known for and made fun of for that stupid mistake she made 10 years ago. I thought women were supposed to build each other up and support each other.

Sarah on

Yes, those five finger discounts really do help!! On a serious side, my god is she gorgeous.

Pamesue on

Really, ladies…are we that catty? She looks great! Heaven knows we all haven’t been angels all of our lives. My 20’s to mid 30’s were a blur & thankfully I lived through them. We live and we learn….that is what makes us who we are today. I say, kudos, Winona!

menotyou on

Great for her! I just hope she didn’t steal them.

Jennifer on

I think she looks great! As far as her past mistakes, they’re in the past. Time to move forward people.

Haley on

Stunning!!!

Choi on

You guys stop talking about stuff she did ten years ago? People do make mistakes and grow. The comments here are just mean!

heather on

There isn’t a single thing attractive about a twig with bug eyes…good grief woman…EAT SOMETHING!

Anna on

I adore Ryder as an actress, she has talent. Concerning the mistakes she made in the past, something has to be said about people who try to rise above thier blunders, learn from it, and move on. I like a good underdog story. Hopefully she makes the best of future opportunities, because I for one, enjoy her movies.

guest on

Honestly people, she shoplifted. Got caught. How many years ago?! I’ve shoplifted in my life…not proud of it, but I did. Moving on……….

Me on

She looks just as beautiful as she did when she was a teenager. I think Mr. Depp is engaged to the wrong woman!

nina on

Everyone knows that she’s screwed things up a time or two in her life, but it’s time to move on.

nimi on

Why pay ten dollars when you can just steal it.

nimi on

Lol. She is on the cover of Red, like got caught red handed while stealing.

Nicole on

As Sarah Jessica Parker said in a recent article “women nowadays are mean girls” and so are the women with mean comments about Wynona Ryder on this article.
She made a mistake a long-long time ago and she paid for it-leave it along mean people. She is a beautiful woman and leave it at that.

Mang Pekto on

@Andrea—To answer your question–“Why are we praising this woman who got caught shoplifting from an upscale department store?”. 1. because that was more than a decade ago; 2. that incident doesn’t define who she is; 3. because she’s not a self-righteous twit like you. She embraces her humanity and humans make mistakes. Welcome to humanity. There’s the positive side and there’s the negative side. Choose one. I know what you chose. You chose to be NEGA.
