The Showdown: Nicole Kidman in Balenciaga (2007) vs. Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford (2012)
The Editor’s Pick: Gwyneth Paltrow
Who Made the Call?: Michelle Tan, Senior Editor
Why She Chose It:
Truth be told, I was thisclose to just tossing a coin because, in my opinion, these two fashion heavy hitters are neck-and-neck bow. Clearly both Nicole and Gwyneth understand that one strong detail can make a seemingly boring monochromatic look stand out. Nicole’s architectural bow that trailed down to the red carpet reinvented her Balenciaga into a modern work of art. And somehow Her Goopness managed to make her Tom Ford cape look less like Superman and just super sophisticated.

Both inspired copy cat couture (See: Emma Stone‘s 2012 Giambattista Valli at the Academy Awards and Lupita Nyong’o’s 2013 Ralph Lauren at the Golden Globes) — but I have to give this one to Gwyneth. On paper her Oscars look sounds absolutely ridiculous: a white one-shoulder gown with a matching cape capped off with a low ponytail and a single cuff?! But on Paltrow, it was somehow both edgy and elegant. (Really, she deserves to win if only because she kept the gown clean and pristine the whole night. Impressive.)
