The Showdown: Hilary Swank in Guy Laroche (2005) vs. Jennifer Lawrence in Calvin Klein Collection (2011)
The Editor’s Pick: Jennifer Lawrence
Who Made the Call?: Catherine Kast, Writer-Reporter
Why She Chose It:
Today is totally the battle of the bold, yet minimalist. No frills allowed, no sparkles, no nothing. And it’s awesome. I had even forgotten about how amazing Hilary looked in this dress because, like many people, I have Jennifer Lawrence tunnel vision.

Though Jennifer ultimately wins for me, Hilary’s midnight-blue Guy Laroche dress brings back memories … to a time when actresses knew how to show off their box office toned bodies sans super-sheer paneling. Hilary was in the gym over four hours per day for her role in Million Dollar Baby and gained a whopping 19 lbs. of muscle. This look was the perfect way to show off that transformation without taking it too far.

The low, asymmetrical back with a train that’s arguably the perfect length — manageable yet stunning? Phenomenal. In 2009, The Office even devoted an episode to figuring out if Hilary Swank is hot or not. This look totally begs off that question. Hot, yes, but definitely refined.

Still, I go for Jennifer’s 2011 Baywatch babe Calvin Klein Collection moment. Ah yes, it’s basically prehistoric times — we might as well call it “2011 BC.” That’s Before Christian [Dior] for all those keeping a timeline on J.Law’s fashion, which obviously I am. Sometimes when I need to remember a time before our staff could predict which Dior dress she was going to don, I Google “Jennifer Lawrence Calvin Klein First Oscars” and I feel instantly rejuvenated.

After her nominated role in Winter’s Bone called for exclusively oversize tees, bombers and beanies, stepping out in this body-con (but not banal) dress made everyone wonder, “Who is that girl?” This is the look that gave us the confident movie star we know and love today, and for that reason, Jennifer gets my vote.

Tony on

While they are both great gowns, I have to disagree with the editors choice and pick Hilary Swank. While Jennifer Lawrence did look amazing and had a moment, I think Swank’s gown is one of the truly most amazing Oscar dresses of all time. That is truly a one of a kind gown that I doubt will ever be repeated.
