Bored of the Basic Blowout? Then Try the 'Heart Braid' for Valentine's Day

With all the cupcakes and chocolate in the office, we’re having a hard time focusing at work today. But as soon as we spotted this heart braid photo on celebrity hairstylist Sarah Potempa’s Insta feed (see the snap above), we knew we had to investigate. Luckily, we got all the details on the fun plait, including a video tutorial!
“I absolutely love braids and try to create unique styles with them weekly,” Potempa, who has worked with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Lea Michele and Jaime King, tells PEOPLE. “This idea popped into my head as I got into the spirit for Valentine’s Day. The combination of the ponytail and the heart braid make it a subtle, yet sweet style. This look is perfect for a romantic date or a fun night on the town with the girls.”
Dying to re-create the style? Watch the exclusive video below, and then catch the step-by-step breakdown of the look.
1. Start by creating a part in the back of your hair in the shape of heart, and then use a clip to secure the section of hair away. (Potempa recommends her Darby clip.)
2. Begin braiding outside the bottom of the heart (part) and continue around the shape of the heart until you make a full braid. Secure it with a clear elastic.
3. Release the clip and brush the hair from the heart (part) along with the rest of the hair into a low ponytail.
4. Pin the base of the braid to the base of the heart (part) and wrap the tail of your braid around the top of the heart. Pin it in place.
Okay, so you will probably need a pal to help you out with this one, but it’s definitely a festive style for the holiday. P.S.: Editors are already practicing on each other, and we might even have to push back our dinner plans until we master it.
