The challenges of dressing a pig are very specific. They tend to be round in the middle, have short, thick legs and arms and a fairly prominent snout that’s difficult to distract from. And in the case of one particular pig, she can be very volatile, meaning the slightest misstep can have a karate chop coming at you so fast you don’t know what hit you. No, not every designer is up for the task of creating a wedding gown for Miss Piggy, but Vivienne Westwood graciously accepted the challenge — and nailed it.
For the upcoming Muppets Most Wanted movie, coming out in March, a chic designer needed to be commissioned to create several outfits appropriate for a European road trip. Westwood was just the woman for the task, designing several outfits including a Harris tweed check coat and a hand-embroidered lace gown. But the pièce de resistance was a wedding dress for Miss Piggy’s long awaited nuptials to Kermit.
Westwood created a “long ivory Court wedding gown, with corset detailing and paillettes made from recycled plastic bottles, accessorised with an ivory tulle veil,” according to a press release. When interviewed by Miss Piggy for Harper’s Bazaar about the gown, Westwood said, “The dress is one of my favorite styles. It’s called the Court dress and is inspired by 17th-century English royalty and the court of King Charles II … It’s the perfect choice for a royal sow.”
This isn’t Miss Piggy’s first wedding dress, and given her track record with “Kermie,” we doubt it will be her last. “Vivienne Westwood is fabulous—just like moi,” Miss Piggy said in a statement. “When I asked her to design this wedding dress for moi’s new movie … she was thrilled and I was thrilled. The only one a bit ‘iffy’ about it was the Frog.” We hope she has some sparkly tennis shoes on under there in case he runs!
