Plus-Size Model Whitney Thompson Shares Her Top Style Tips For Curvy Girls

01/30/2014 at 02:45 PM ET

You probably know Whitney Thompson from one of the many fashion campaigns she’s starred in since being the first plus-size model to win America’s Next Top Model in 2008. But when she’s not in front of the lens, Thompson also loves to share her style advice and promote a healthy body image mentality as a spokesperson for the National Eating Disorder Association.

Most recently, the star teamed up with plus-size shopping site Evans.com to showcase some fashion-forward new looks using her favorite pieces from the label’s spring collection.

“I think the No. 1 thing I would tell curvy women is to not wear clothes that are too big,” Thompson tells PEOPLE. “It makes you look frumpty dumpty. If you are annoyed that you are a size 16 or 18, go home and cut out the tags and never think about it again. Nobody needs to know what size you are — not even you.”

The main thing Thompson loves about the Evans line is the figure-friendly fabrics. “When I started, there was so much polyester on the market. It’s so great that now the plus-size [girl] doesn’t feel like she can’t be fashionable too. I love anything silky and anything with cotton. Anything that breathes, and that makes you feel delicate and feminine, like a woman.” Below, she gives us the rundown on the four looks she put together.

LOOK 1: “I absolutely love this outfit. It’s such a fun party dress with the sheer overlay, and it hides any tummy issues you might have. At the same time the cut draws attention upward toward the waist. You just throw your hands on your hips and you have that hourglass shape. You don’t have to suck in all night. And the navy blue feels like a fresh departure from basic black.”

LOOK 2: “This outfit would be a great for work if you threw a blazer over it, and it would also be great to for a night out. Ditch the blazer, unbutton a few buttons. It’s very sexy and fun. The skirt was actually lace, but it’s stretchy material. It’s really soft and comfortable, but it looks really classic. And the top is really modern so it’s a fun mix.”

LOOK 3: “The dress underneath is a jersey material and then has a sheer fiery overlay that wraps around. It’s really comfortable, and with that overlay you see a hint of your silhouette and you still leave a little to the imagination. Plus, orange is such a hot color this season. It’s everywhere, and I love pulling out that statement color. Everyone can do it.”

LOOK 4:”I love the boyfriend jean. It’s so comfortable. I think anyone can pull off the relaxed fit. Especially if you throw a cuff on the bottom and add a heel. It doesn’t look like you tried too hard. The shirt is cotton so it breathes, but there is some subtle sheer detailing. It’s just kind of that perfect hint of sexy. The teal necklace is a great pop of color as well.”

Thompson has posed in beautiful dresses plenty of times, but there’s one major fashion moment coming up for her that’s unlike any other: Her wedding day! And her modeling experience helped make dress shopping a cinch; she only had one in mind.

“I think I’m going to wear my mother’s dress,” she says. “I’ve modeled so many wedding gowns that it’s lost the appeal. For a model, it’s a nightmare because you are modeling 100 dresses and they all lace up the back — it takes, like, an hour to put on. But the sentimentality means a lot to me.”

True to her stylish background, though, she’s going to tweak the look a bit to make sure it’s perfect for her. “I want to make sure it accentuates my waist. It’s a November wedding in Scotland, so I want something with lace sleeves.”

Subliiiiiiiiiime Lady!!!!
She is “plus size” what?!?!
she is a lovely NORMAL blond lady, like 80% of the population, with sweet curves like real women in the whole world… she is not an ANOREXIC model…starving herself to fit a size ZERO…. and killing her health!!
She is fabulous and just has a normal beauty and size ♥♡♥♡

The woman seems completely healthy and “normal” size to me.

lovely. i dig it.

She rocks! But why does PEOPLE perpetuate the North American obsession with labeling people? Your title should proudly call her a Model- period. Drives me insane.. she’s far from plus size in the real world anyway!! Grow up People Mag.

Victoria, she calls herself a ‘plus-size’ model, so there’s nothing wrong with People saying it. She’s proud of that and proud of being a positive role model for body image and taking care of the body you’re in. Whitney, even being younger than me, is a role model to me as I struggle every day with my self-image.

she is hardly a plus size model ,geez

Vinciano on

In the real modeling world, she’s too big too even be a plus size model. She is more celebrity than model.

These plus size models are not really plus size. I wish they would stop saying that, they still make them look like a movie star. Real plus size for once I’d like to see, go into your 1x and 2x and so on.

If she’s a plus size, then I’m the size of a Buick (and I wear a 12).

Like normal, these kind of stories bring out the people saying she is ‘normal’ and ‘curves like real women’. We women come in ALL different sizes. Please dont hate on those of us who are naturally thin by presuming we arent ‘real women’.

I really admire Whitney Thompson. Loved her on ANTM. She looks as beautiful as ever.

Love her and its awesome that we all have the same friends :). good job Whitney!!!

Very pretty lady but she would look SO SO much better if she ditched that bleached outdated hair… and its WAY too long…. if she tweaked that hair it would just make her look THAT much more beautiful.

You go Whitney!!

Love all these looks … she’s gorgeous.

OMG, she is NOT normal. She is large. Not obese, but large. She has a tummy sticking out, large arms, very big chest and large butt. People who are size 16 to 18 should start moving more and eating less junk.

She looks like a “normal” size to me.
I didn’t like the outfits. But she looks so lovely in her engagement photos. I wish her the very best.

I don’t much like any of the clothes she’s wearing–wouldn’t like them on a size 2. But it’s her hair that’s really hideous. Witchlike.

I am so confused on how and why she is plus sized. She looks to be a very healthy and happy woman.

Tiff on

In what universe is this woman normal-sized?? If that is what people here in this thread think is normal, no wonder the US is so obese!

Gorgeous girl, plus size or not. I like all the looks except the first one with the navy blue dress. My favorite is the orange overlay dress.

She’s lovely absolutely stunning. But she is a larger girl. Which, if you watch antm, you would know she takes with pride. There is nothing wrong with being plus size. It’s her job. Does it make her any less beautiful? Not in the slightest. But (to those girls calling her a real woman based off of her curves) it also doesn’t make thin girls any less of a woman because she doesn’t have curves.
