Team USA's Olympic Opening Ceremony Uniform: Star-Spangled and Striped for Sochi

It will be hard to miss Team USA at the winter Olympics opening ceremonies in Sochi, Russia, Feb. 7. Not only because they tend to be one of the bigger (and pretty boisterous) teams — but also because they’ve got one of the most eye-catching uniforms you’re bound to see walk into the stadium.

Designed by Ralph Lauren (as has been every Olympic team uniform since 2008), the brightly patterned sweaters are meant to represent “classic Americana patchwork quilts and sweaters,” David Lauren, the company’s EVP of marketing, said on the Today show during the official reveal. The back of the sweater continues the pattern of white stars on a blue background, with “USA” emblazoned in large red letters.

Also part of the uniform: boots with red laces, white fleece pants, a belt “accented with jacquard tape featuring patriotic graphics” and mittens that open to say “GO 4″ on one hand and “GOLD” on the other. And, following the controversy over the 2012 uniforms, which were made in China, everything is made in the USA. “We’re so proud, working with vendors from across America, across every state,” Lauren said.

Added curler Jared Zezel (not pictured; above are hockey players Zach Parise and Julie Chu), who helped unveil the uniform on the Today show: “It’s awesome that it’s one hundred percent American. It’s very patriotic looking. It looks great.” And if you want to feel like you’re part of the excitement, you can pick up any of the pieces on TeamUSAShop.com. All proceeds from the sweater’s sales will be donated to the U.S. Olympic Committee, which funds Team USA.

What do you think of the uniforms? Will you add this sweater to your wardrobe?

Kate on

vickynicole on

Those outfits are horrendous, lol.

PhoebeBuffay on

A coat of many colors that my momma made for me….

Looks like rags sewn together.

I agree with Ella.

Tracy on

Well, at least it won’t be mistaken for any other country.

DaisyMoon on

It’s kinda busy…

Sarah on

So we’re greeting the world in sweatpants!? Oh for goodness sake.

Angela on

the outfits are on the busy side but they aren’t that bad.

Lisa on

Holy Patriotic Vomit, Batman!

Cathy Holland on

They look way too busy So much on them They are to see USA Really don’t likr them An embarrassment for our athletes

Cathy Holland on

OMG! You have to be kidding How embarrassing for our athletes Looks like old rags sewn together

Heather on

The sweaters are mostly acceptable, but the sweatpants are not worthy of the opening ceremony. We’ll look like the sterotype- just rolled out of bed, sloppy Americans with no sense of style. The pants should have been for Olympic village lounging in their rooms.

Rebecca on

I love them. Go USA!!

Ayisha on

I love it

donnatex on

@ Ella…. Jealous much?

Kate on

They might be wearing this UNDER the red, white and blue pea coats at the opening ceremonies but this is not all they are wearing. They would freeze.

Broadwayfan on

I just wish Evan was going to be able to compete!
Hope he gets to keep the outfit.
Although it’s a little too “busy” for my taste.

bkable on

Well that’s embarrassing… glad I’m Canadian lol

JenC on

@Ella. I bleed red, white and blue. There is no such thing as obnoxiously patriotic in my mind. Hopefully you are not American. Go Team USA!

katy on

At least they’re not wearing berets like they were in the last summer games.

aquarius64 on

Wonder Woman’s winter outfit

Sheila on

Could you get any tackier?

Liza on

They look like your typical tacky Christmas sweaters! Ralph Lauren is like 75 years old and is obviously designing for his 75 year-old peers. My grandmother would love that sweater! Time for a new designer, for gosh sake.

charlotte on

just a little too busy. not impressed at all. better luck next time

Wendy on

The sweater’s too busy… but I love the overall outfit style.

Sara on

I love it! Wayyyyy better than those weird Ralph Lauren logo outfits they had a couple of years ago. I want the world to know it’s the USA. I also think the stars are cool.

Erika on

And once the sweater opens up, fireworks start shooting out in all their red, white, and blue glory!!!!!

Meg on

Definitely too casual. Do not care for it looks like a bad grandma’s sweater.

angela on

these outfits are very patriotic, typical american. but you should see the german one. so many colors it’s blinding you. at least you have white pants. we do have white pants too (i think that’s meant as a sweat suit) but the pants for the ceremonies are of a very bright orange pattern plus jackets made with yellow, white and blue stripes. looks like the costume of a clown.

peoplereader on

Alot of these comments are rude…So not embarassing at all!

kate on

The only thing decent about that outfit is the boots. (I am not saying this because my countries uniforms have been the absolute best in recent years.) People have a style conscience and this is not something I would have ever thought would be considered classy. Ralph Lauren, I expect so much better from you! You are Ralph Lauren for gods sake!

anon on

I for one love them! That’s what it’s about…standing out. The summer ones were boring.

Marilyne on

I love them GO team USA!!!!

Laura on

Looks like a sweater cardigan Bill Cosby would have worn. How hard is it to make them look cool?

j on

I like them. Really like them. They should be patriotic.

Cali on

To each their own. Nothing wrong about celebrating America, you could always go to Russia and live. Ella, typical Americana and you have the typical arrogant American answer

Laura on

How hard is it to make them look cool? It looks like a sweater Bill Cosby would have worn.

Ella on

Umm Cali, I am Canadian, thank God!!

Marion on

Apart from the fact that they are busy and kind of unattractive, aren’t these ceremonies usually outside? They’re going to freeze their touchies off. I’d refuse to outside in RUSSIA in February in that.

Sue on

Here comes the clowns! Those are so horrible! Was really hoping it was a joke! I’d refuse to march in the opening ceremonies so as to not embarrass my country with this mess.

HA RC on

And more uglier than ever!!

Marie Patterson on

Sweatpants?? That’s a UNIFORM??? A sweater and SWEATPANTS? Whoever thought Ralph Lauren would be at such a loss for ideas that he would go with SWEATPANTS!! Poor USA :(

liarlairpantsonfire on

I has a sweater that looked almost exactly like that! Picture it; Casual Corner, 1990. Retro?

Kris on

They need to get a new designer. I think most of the outfits that have been designed in the last few olympics have not been well thought out. The concept this year would have been good if it was reined in just a bit. Somewhere it went from looking good to jumping into a tacky and over powering outfit. Yuk…..

Janet Long on

I love it. It is so creative. I want one!

Mark on

Ralph, really? What is up with the bumpkin sweater and sweats? Only once to make a good first impression, and this is what you think is a good one or even one that represents our country? I am glad I will not be donning this outfit in public! Hopefully there is a matching ski mask the athletes can wear to lessen the emnbarrassment?

Marsha Hill on

What do the athletes think of these monstrosities?
Who in the world approved these designs? There must be hundreds of American designers who would have done a better job.
What do you think they will sell for on ebay after the Olympics?

Stacey McRae on

Time to pick a new designer. These clothes SUCK!.
