Golden Globes 2014: The Looks We Just Weren't Loving

01/13/2014 at 08:35 AM ET

You may have noticed that we love awards season, particularly dress discussions. And though we prefer to recount the good dresses, occasionally a look we’re not crazy about will cross our desk and inspire plenty of heated debate in the office. We rounded up the looks that didn’t quite “land,” in our opinion, as well as the ones we loved the most. Below, see the dresses we disliked from Sunday’s Golden Globes. And don’t forget to check out all the links below to catch up on our must-see beauty looks, gown roundup, all the news from the night and much more.

Andrea Lavinthal, Beauty and Style Director: I’m probably going to get fired and possibly banished from Earth for saying this, but I did not like Jennifer Lawrence‘s dress. Yes, she made our best-dressed list, but that’s only because I was overruled by the rest of the team who threatened to withhold all delicious baked goods unless I relented.

It’s not the worst dress in the world (see Paula Patton), but it’s far from the best. The pleated white fabric reminds me of my down comforter and the bottom black belt hits at the most unflattering place. But most of all, it’s not the sexy, sparkly number I hand-picked for her.

Alex Apatoff, Style News Editor: I didn’t like Jennifer Lawrence’s dress either, but I’m used to Dior letting me down when it comes to her. I really didn’t like Paula Patton’s dress, but since she has yet to wear something I do like, that one didn’t hit me as hard.

No, the dress that received the dubious distinction of “worst of the night,” for me, was Zoë Saldana’s Prabal Gurung creation. The duo are good friends, and he’s whipped up some fabulous looks for her in the past, which is why I’m wondering if maybe they got in a huge fight over Christmas? This dress was overdesigned, over-the-top and totally underwhelming (can we be over sheer panels already?) — I expected much more from two people whose style I admire so much. Let’s hope they kiss and make up before the Oscars.

Brittany Talarico, Associate Editor: I think my eyes glazed over and I actually fell asleep in front of the TV when Emma Stone hit the stage to present at the Golden Globes. Her Chanel dress was not memorable amid this group of gowns, and the billowy skirt did not flatter her frame in the right places. Usually Emma hits a style high note, but everything about this look was flat. Next time, Stone, bring on the color.

Zoë Ruderman, Senior Style Editor: What I really want to say (that the ruffles on Patton’s cream-colored gown seem inspired by a certain part of the anatomy) isn’t SFW, so let’s just leave it at this: I understand the desire to stand out, but without that mass of fabric cascading down her left side, the presenter still would have stood out. Because when your body looks like hers (and the dress is slightly see-through — whoops!), standing out is a given.

There were so many “misses” last night, it’s hard to pick just one. There were only a few nice ones.

No dress was WORSE then Lena Dunhams, bright yellow that did NOTHING for her figure!

Andrea, you are not alone. I didn’t like J. Law’s dress at all. Clearly, you are the only one with any sense on that team. Who in God’s name thinks that dress should be on the best dressed list…? It’s not her best by any stretch of the imagination. I kind of like Paula Patton’s dress. The ruffle is too big but it was much better than what Amy Adams wore.

It’s amazing that these so called “stylists” are actually paid to produce these horrible outfits on women who are really lovely (for the most part). It was actually difficult finding outfits that were truly gorgeous.

Totally agree that Jennifer Lawrence’s dress was not a winner. Looked like a churro to me with all those pleats down the front, held in place with black ribbon in two places. Of course, her hair and cute face draw one’s attention back to how adorable she is.

I think Paula Patton had the worst dress! I loved Jennifer Lawrence’s makeup, the dress was not exciting! Her makeup looked gorgeous!

Julia Roberts Dolce and Gabana (sp?) looked like she changed her mind halfway through dressing and opted for a tailored white blouse under a strapless gown. Thought maybe she had a rash and needed to cover her chest up. just very odd.

I didn’t care for what Emma Watson wore. It was just weird..like they ran out of material for a dress so she stuck some pants under it.

Thank you for saying that Jennifer Lawrence dress was one of the worst dressed! I agree with all of these on this article.

Sandra Bullock had the worst dress.
