Golden Globes 2014: The Looks We Just Weren't Loving
You may have noticed that we love awards season, particularly dress discussions. And though we prefer to recount the good dresses, occasionally a look we’re not crazy about will cross our desk and inspire plenty of heated debate in the office. We rounded up the looks that didn’t quite “land,” in our opinion, as well as the ones we loved the most. Below, see the dresses we disliked from Sunday’s Golden Globes. And don’t forget to check out all the links below to catch up on our must-see beauty looks, gown roundup, all the news from the night and much more.
Andrea Lavinthal, Beauty and Style Director: I’m probably going to get fired and possibly banished from Earth for saying this, but I did not like Jennifer Lawrence‘s dress. Yes, she made our best-dressed list, but that’s only because I was overruled by the rest of the team who threatened to withhold all delicious baked goods unless I relented.
It’s not the worst dress in the world (see Paula Patton), but it’s far from the best. The pleated white fabric reminds me of my down comforter and the bottom black belt hits at the most unflattering place. But most of all, it’s not the sexy, sparkly number I hand-picked for her.
Alex Apatoff, Style News Editor: I didn’t like Jennifer Lawrence’s dress either, but I’m used to Dior letting me down when it comes to her. I really didn’t like Paula Patton’s dress, but since she has yet to wear something I do like, that one didn’t hit me as hard.
No, the dress that received the dubious distinction of “worst of the night,” for me, was Zoë Saldana’s Prabal Gurung creation. The duo are good friends, and he’s whipped up some fabulous looks for her in the past, which is why I’m wondering if maybe they got in a huge fight over Christmas? This dress was overdesigned, over-the-top and totally underwhelming (can we be over sheer panels already?) — I expected much more from two people whose style I admire so much. Let’s hope they kiss and make up before the Oscars.

Brittany Talarico, Associate Editor: I think my eyes glazed over and I actually fell asleep in front of the TV when Emma Stone hit the stage to present at the Golden Globes. Her Chanel dress was not memorable amid this group of gowns, and the billowy skirt did not flatter her frame in the right places. Usually Emma hits a style high note, but everything about this look was flat. Next time, Stone, bring on the color.
Zoë Ruderman, Senior Style Editor: What I really want to say (that the ruffles on Patton’s cream-colored gown seem inspired by a certain part of the anatomy) isn’t SFW, so let’s just leave it at this: I understand the desire to stand out, but without that mass of fabric cascading down her left side, the presenter still would have stood out. Because when your body looks like hers (and the dress is slightly see-through — whoops!), standing out is a given.
