Golden Globes 2014: Our Ultimate Favorite Dresses

01/13/2014 at 08:30 AM ET

As we may have mentioned, we get a little excited around awards season, and one of our favorite things to do is debate dresses. Below, see the dresses most beloved by PEOPLE StyleWatch editors — and be sure to check out our picks for the ones we could have done without. And don’t forget to check out all the links below to catch up on our must-see beauty looks, gown roundup, all the news from the night and much more.

KAte Mara Golden Globes 2014Arroyo/GG/ AFF-USA.COM

Andrea Lavinthal, Beauty and Style Director: You’re not going to believe me, but I totally picked out this dress for Kate Mara. Where’s my proof? On the cutting room floor after editing our predict-a-gown video. I swear! The minute I saw this slinky J. Mendel gown on the designer’s runway, with its architectural cap sleeve, gathered waistline, sheer skirt and seriously plunging neckline, I made a note that it would look gorgeous on Kate Mara. A brunette Kate Mara, since cool tones typically work best with dark hair. But the newly-blonde star pulled off the silver hue beautifully and, um, filled out the middle quite nicely.

Lupita Nyong'o Golden Globes 2014Danny Moloshok/Reuters/Landov

Alex Apatoff, Style News Editor: The star of 12 Years a Slave, Lupita Nyong’o has long been on our “one to watchstyle shortlist. So I wasn’t surprised when the actress stepped onto the carpet just as the night began — and I immediately knew that no one else was going to top her all night. Her Ralph Lauren Collection gown was the perfect shade for her skin tone, the perfect shape for her figure and the perfect look to make a major impact. She added understated gold-and-diamond Fred Leighton studs and a few massive vintage Fred Leighton diamond rings, then let her striking cat eye add a little drama to the otherwise clean and simple look. She not only shut the competition down for the entire Golden Globes, she might have done it for the rest of the year — you’ll be seeing this dress topping “Best Of” lists in December.

Emma Watson Golden Globes 2014FameFlynet

Brittany Talarico, Associate Editor: Forget the gowns. Emma Watson opened a whole new style door at this year’s Globes in a pair of pants and double-slit floor-skimming top by Dior Haute Couture. Not only did she radiate confidence, but she totally commanded attention on the carpet. (Or at least my attention.) Plus, I love the sexy open back detail on the design and that she paired it with one gold Dior earring. I don’t know who can top this at the SAGs next week.

Kate Beckinsale Golden Globes 2014Jason Merritt/Getty

Zoë Ruderman, Senior Style Editor: I knew someone would wear this strapless Zuhair Murad stunner sometime during the 2014 awards season. I just thought it would be me (or Jennifer Lopez) at the Grammys later this month. But Kate Beckinsale beat us to the metallic gown. And while I’m still mad at her, I have to admit the actress looks really amazing in the dress, especially with her signature perky pony, which really shows off the neckline and those black-and-white Chopard earrings.

Lovely Lupita!

Tajma on

Lupita

Angie on

Olivia Wilde looked incredible! But really, people mag? Do we need to read virtually the same article over and over again, just with different people attached to it? I expected several articles, but this is overkill, big time.

Abbie on

Lupita was amazing!

Raffaele Zccaro on

More important is the best “UNDRESSED” “star”? Those who wear less is what people want to see– They should just come out with BARE BOOBS anymore—And BAGS over their heads- Faces dont matter anymore– Its the BOOBS that do!!!

your picks are all wrong except for the second and fourth one. best dressed should go to cate blanchett and uma thurman. my mouth went agape when she walked out on stage.

Margarita on

Cate Blanchett. The woman would look beautiful even in a potato sack but that black lace dress she wore was amazing. The back of the dress is gorgeous.

Kristin on

Naomi Watts was best dressed. Second place – Kate Beckinsale.

mr monkee on

Personally, I liked Heidi Klum’s dress the best.

Sarah on

I loved Julianna Marguilis dress…am I the only one?

Sniper on

I dont agree with Andrea Lavinthal at all. The color of the dress, her hair and the too heavy make up looks like she is aduitioning for a role as Bride of Frankenstine. MARGOT ROBBIE was my very favorite. She looked smokin in that dress and loved the colors with the stones.

Kate on

1. Cate Blanchett
2. Amber Heard
3. Kate Beckinsale
4. Margot Robbie
5. Rocsi Diaz

In that order, stunning dresses!

Erin on

Lupita Nyongo-Stunning!

.. of the 4 pictured here, I prefer Lupita Nyong’o.

but I also thought Cate Blanchett and Julie Bowen looked smashing!

Shannon on

Kate Beckinsale

Lupita looked awesome! On most péople that style would look silly and theatrical, but she looks stunning. Didn’t even know she had such a lovely figure. Her skin is gorgeous, it’s so flawless. Envy!
Kate’s is really nice as well, but I dislike that she always wears her hair like that on the red carpet. It’s not flattering.
Not sure how Emma made the list…

Marsha on

I loved Tina Fey’s burgundy gown! That thing was gorgeous!!!!!

MJ on

Naomi Watts!

Catherine on

Kate Beckinsale most definitely. Reese Witherspoon looked amazing and Naomi Watts too. I was unimpressed with a lot of the dresses. And Kate Mara does not look good as a blonde!

vamanos on

I agree Emma Watson looks nice. I love the pants with dress look, since I always cover my legs so I often wear shorter dresses with pants. Also its a nice throwback to Lucille Ball’s style.
Some sparkle would have been nice though.
