Olivia Wilde Shares Her Go-To Holiday Makeup Look (and Secrets for Taming Her 'Devil Brows')
Olivia Wilde may have picked up enough tricks from movie sets and her Revlon gig to DIY a holiday makeup look at home, but that doesn’t mean she’s ready to go pro. Even she has her beauty hangups.
“I wish I could do a red lip, but I’m more comfortable with a bold eye,” the actress told PEOPLE while promoting the Revlon’s new Age Defying Collection in N.Y.C. “I know once I do the eye, it’s done. Inevitably, I’m going to eat something [or] kiss someone hello, so I mess up lipstick pretty much immediately. I still love playing with different shades of lipstick, but if I’m going to a holiday party, and I want to feel super-confident I’m doing a metallic eye.”
And, she adds, the key good to eye makeup is clean, well-shaped brows. “It changes your face so much when you have your eyebrows filled in and softened,” she said. “I spent years trying to look like Kate Moss with wispy thin eyebrows, which was a horrible mistake and everyone told me not to do it. So now I’m obsessed.”
As for her brow routine, she’s all about a good pencil. “It’s easier for me than a powder. I’m so fast with a pencil now too,” she said. “My eyebrows are so warped from years of abuse that I brush them to the side and then I pencil in the rest. If I brush them up they look like crazy, pointy, devil horns. Everyone in my family has crazy pointy eyebrows. So I try to soften them and take them down a notch.”
And while she likes to experiment with her makeup, Wilde keeps it simple when it comes to her hair. “I wish I could do more interesting hairstyles myself, but when in doubt, think of the French and keep it simple. Especially with hair, we can get way too into curls. That curl that’s not brushed out is the worst. I can’t really work a curling iron anyway, so I don’t have to worry about it.”
“She seemed surprised by the question,” Wilde said. “She was like: ‘I just take care of myself.’ And she’s very adamant against plastic surgery and anything like that; ‘just be good to yourself.’ That’s how we have to think and restructure the perspective when it comes to aging.”
Wilde swears by the line’s Age Defying CC cream, which hits stores in January, for her daily routine — it meets her criteria for taking care of herself (the SPF) and simplicity (the all-in-one element). Another secret skin weapon she swears by: “I love the Dr. Hauschka Rose Day Cream. Gucci Westman [Revlon's Global Artistic Director] turned me on to that. She slathers it on like a mask. It feels so good.”
