You’ve been busily bookmarking our gift guide, but this December, we’re also going to draw your attention to great gifts that also give back — to the community, to children, to the world around us. Check them out, and share your favorite gifts that give in the comments.

One year ago tomorrow, the nation was rocked by the horrific events at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., which left 20 students and six educators dead. But in the wake of the senseless violence, the community came together to honor the victims and to try to build something to combat the devastation.

Two moms of current Sandy Hook second graders, Jennifer Stoltz and Dana Schicker, were inspired to create a green shade in honor of Sandy Hook’s school colors, and teamed up with OPI to produce what eventually became “Sandy Hook Green.” OPI’s Artistic Director and EVP Suzi-Weiss Fleischmann donated 10,000 bottles to the cause, which are free with a $26 donation (in honor of the lives lost)

Donations go not only to help the families who lost someone in the shooting, but also to work to create initiatives to prevent gun violence in the future — hence the “promise.” And there’s no better cause than “peace on earth” to celebrate at the holidays, so this is one shade that any girl on your list would wear proudly. For more information, visit SandyHookPromise.org and check out the nailpolish here.

How are you giving back this holiday season? What’s your charity of choice? Let us know in the comments.
