Evangeline Lilly On Her 'Best Butt Ever' Women's Health Cover: I Wanted Something Classier

Evangeline Lilly has a new movie out (The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug in case you’re behind on your holiday blockbuster buzz), so you’d think her promo tour would be focused on the film and her acting, but instead, all the attention’s been on — to put it bluntly — her butt.

Her asset is featured on the January issue of Women’s Health in a pair of itty-bitty booty shorts with the tagline, “Best Butt Ever!” And the actress told Conan O’Brien on Wednesday night that the shot — and the headline — came as a surprise to her.

“Do you think I would have done the shoot if they said, ‘Oh, by the way, we’re gonna say ‘Best Butt Ever!’ and put a big arrow to your behind?’” she asked O’Brien. “You know, every woman is after a kind of classy image, I didn’t want T&A on my cover. It’s a women’s magazine, not Maxim.”

Lilly spoke out again about the cover on ET Canada Friday, explaining that while the butt admiration is flattering, it still makes her uncomfortable: “I don’t know, it just felt like the wrong thing in the wrong place. But I’m not going to turn my nose up to a compliment. I mean it’s very nice of them to point out that they think that it’s nice. That’s very nice of them to say.”

She adds: “Every time you go to do a new photo shoot, you sort of lay down the ground rules. You explain the kind of image that you want portrayed of yourself, and I don’t know too many women who would approach a women’s magazine and say, ‘The image I’m hoping for is a rear end shot with my butt hanging out of some short shorts.’ That is not what you’re after. You’re kind of after something that’s a little more approachable to other women, a little classier. You’d expect that of a man’s magazine because men like the booty, right?”

And while we’re definitely intrigued by what exercises lead to the star’s toned behind, we kind of understand why she’s a bit bummed about not knowing the mag’s cover plan before the issue hit newsstands.

What do you think of the cover controversy? Should Lilly be offended?

1) If you pose for anything in a photo shoot, there’s obviously a chance it could be the cover shot. So if you don’t like the outfit or the angle, don’t do it.
2) It’s a fitness magazine, it’s not that big a deal if a body part is pointed out as being excellent because people are reading that magazine, in part, to achieve great bodies.
3) After reading some comments, some of you are right. There’s not much of a butt there. What she has is fine but it’s not crazy perky, round or perfect, definitely not “best butt ever”. Lilly shouldn’t have a complex about it, that’s not what I’m advocating, but what a hyperbolic statement.

Seriously? These celebrities approve their images, especially when they’re on the cover of a magazine. I love how she’s acting like she had no control over any of it.

is that why she posed in her underwear? because she wants to create a ‘classy image’? give me a break.

When you do a shoot, they take 100′s of photos and the pose is something many have done so the pose it quite understandable. She probably thought it would run from the waist up when she did it. As a model, I get the surprise to see how and what was used. I’ve done that pose several times and my butt was never used. Always waist or neck up. I also wouldnt want those photos used

I think if she wanted a classier image she should have put more clothes on. She says that’s for Maxim, not women’s health but she has half a shirt and barely any shorts on. Dress the part you want: you want to be classy and respected then dress that way.

Umm, she put on the skimpy outfit and knew exactly what pictures the photographer was taking. Don’t act all shocked and surprised that the cover photo they chose was one of your behind. Oh well, girl!!

Uhmmm why else would you wear a half shirt & itsy bitsy shorts? Its a cute attempt but I am not buying it sister.

Truthfully, she put on the shorts. She had to have known her butt was hanging out. She could have spoken out on the spot and asked for something more modest. I’m sure she was shocked that the cover had a huge arrow pointing to her butt and maybe she expected them to pick a different photo. However, she posed and knew this photo was taken. She needs to at least admit that she realizes now that any photo can go on a cover and she needs to be better at being in control of what she’s OK with in shoots. And then she can say that she learned a valuable lesson from the WH mag shoot. She just wishes she didn’t have to learn this way because it’s not the image she wants of herself. She wants women to know that it’s not about just one body part- it’s about being healthy and loving your whole package. Or whatever, but I don’t appreciate all the blame. And she is turning her nose up at a compliment.
