Victoria's Secret Fashion Show: The Best From Backstage

Being a Victoria’s Secret Angel isn’t all gorgeous hair and perfect teeth — it’s a lot of hard work. Just check out Karlie Kloss’s Instagram, above, in which she and some very busy Angels lined up backstage to get their social media on.

We got a tour of the hectic, glam and oh-so-glittery backstage, where hair and makeup teams were hard at work getting the girls ready — and we grabbed a few moments with the Angels to talk about the big night. Below, check out a few of our favorite behind-the-scenes snaps and quotes, then come back tomorrow to read all about how they prepped for the show.

Our own Ana Calderone snapped Erin Heatherton (above) getting her hair blown out as only an Angel can. When Heatherton gave PEOPLE a scientific rundown on the merits of drinking a hot water/cayenne/lemon/ginger concoction in the morning, we asked how she knew so much. Turns out she wasn’t always planning to parade around in heels and panties.

“I wanted to be a doctor so I like talking about it and learning,” she says. “It’s beneficial for work but I more like learning about the body. You know, a lot of women retain a lot of water because they’re eating artificial sweeteners. All that stuff is really important to know if you’re interested in looking your best.”

Who is she most excited to see in the show? “I love to see my girlfriends walking. I always try to catch them on the screen like Doutzen, Lily, Candice, Adriana … everybody!”

Last year, Karlie Kloss (above) surprised anyone with a major cut. This year, she didn’t have any similar shocks up her sleeve, but she still had a blast serving as the unofficial backstage photographer. She showed off this first look at one of her outfits on her own Insta, plus shared pics of models chowing down and goofing off.

What workout did the always-upbeat Kloss hate the most? “There’s a butt exercise that’s a bazillion leg lifts and up and to the side and circles and this and then the other way. My God, I literally think my butt is as tight and toned as it’ll ever be,” she says. And her favorite Angel to watch? “Oh, I love Adriana or Gisele. I mean Gisele, she’s the queen. And Adriana I mean, my God. Maybe it’s the Brazilian women.”

Candice Swanepoel (above) is finally ready for the Fantasy Bra to make its runway debut after months of anticipation. And though she’s nervous to wear $10 million of jewels down the catwalk, it’s actually an improvement on the wings. “This year I don’t have wings, I have the fantasy bra, so it takes a little bit of pressure off,” she says. “I get really nervous if I know that I’m wearing heavy wings because it’s like a balancing act.”

Probably the biggest surprise? She actually eats more than usual right before the show to keep her energy up.

Jourdan Dunn (above, center), meanwhile, never diets at all. “I’m really bad, I’m like the worst for this,” she says. “Fitness wise not so much. I didn’t really do anything.” What she did do, though, was cue up some pump-up jams on her iPod — but we don’t think we’ll be hearing her walk down the runway to them. “I’m listening to Drake, his album, and Pusha T’s album.” she shares. “Its not really VS friendly really but that’s what I’m listening to.”

Who are you most psyched to see when the show airs?

I honestly don’t know why folks make such a fuss over models in general, and the Victoria’s Secret fashion show in particular. No one will ever be able to convince me that modeling is such “hard work.” Models basically get paid to use their bodies as glorified mannequins and hangers for clothes. A team of makeup artists and hairstylists get paid to make them look “glam.” All they have to do is stay skinny and show up to work. Not too much brain power goes into figuring out how to walk down a runway or pose for the camera. A toddler could do it (and some actually do, if they model for baby/child catalogs). I guess maybe starving yourself and working out to keep your weight down might be “hard work” but so many women do those things on a daily basis in addition to working full-time jobs. Give me a good teacher over a model any day … they do a lot more (valuable) “hard work” for much less pay, without any of the acclaim that people heap on models. No disrespect to the Victoria’s Secret models. They have to earn a living just like everyone else. But modeling is just a job like any other, IMO.

Jessica, when I walk thru the mall it takes at lease 100 women walking bye to see one as hot as the models you deem worthless,

Lots of make-up and expensive hair products does not equal beauty. It equals fake. These female models are incredibly fake.

Why is it such a problem with female models but we are perfectly alright with drooling over shirtless Ryan Goslings and Channing Tatums. Objectifying people is a two-way deal so stop being so high and mighty. Besides, the whole point of modeling IS vanity. Models use their best assets – their bodies – much like scientists use their brains and musicians use their ears and nimble fingers. We don’t see people complaining about how smart Stephen Hawking is or how skilled of a singer Christina Aguilera is. So what’s disgusting really is how we put something so ordinary to such high precedence.

@ JohnE: I never said models are “worthless.” I just think they’re no different from millions of regular, hard-working Americans. And “hot” is really a matter of taste. Not all men find the “tall-and-skinny” model body type attractive. Countless studies have shown that the majority of men actually tend to prefer women of average height with some curves. You may find tall, size-0 women appealing, but you can’t speak for all men.
