Rihanna's Final River Island Collection Is ... Surprisingly Tame (For Her)

Rihanna’s collaboration with River Island has been quite the yearlong roller coaster. Her fashion show garnered questionable reviews — but that didn’t stop the pieces from flying off the shelves. She stated that she was designing for girls with “sassy personalities,” but sometimes it seemed that the only personality sassy enough to make the clothes work was her own.
But her final collection for the clothing line is closing the year out on a decidedly subdued note. Oh sure, there are the pieces Rihanna could probably pull off better than the rest of us, like a full-length coatdress based on a varsity jacket, which practically requires the star’s statuesque figure and a tiny crop top underneath. For a little extra fun, she tossed in some fitted bodysuits, a lumberjack-meets-trucker hat and a denim jumpsuit.
Other pieces, though, are downright wearable. No mesh skirts or built-in waist-tied shirts here. Instead, the star created slim-fitting print trousers in floral and plaid, slinky maxi dresses (the halter style is above), pencil skirts and tuxedo dresses in embossed gold and simple stiletto heels. There are turtlenecks, classic raincoats and simple dresses — all of which would look fabulous on Rihanna, but on pretty much anyone else as well.
It’s unlike Rihanna not to make a major statment on her way out the door — but we suppose we prefer the “ending on a high note” approach to “going out with a bang.” Check out a behind-the-scenes video here, then tell us, what do you think of her last collection for River Island? Will you be preordering any of the pieces today?
