It’s hardly the first time Jay Z and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have experienced the sweet smell of success, but it is the first time they’ve bottled it for sale. The media moguls and entrepreneurs are releasing their first fragrances — indepenently, of course, though the stars do have quite a bit in common, like perfectionism and expensive taste. Jay Z’s will be called “Gold Jay Z” and the Olsens are releasing “Nirvana White and Nirvana Black.”
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have slowly been infiltrating the fashion world on every level — first through high-end apparel, then eyewear, then handbags and now through their debut scents for fashion line Elizabeth and James, which will hit Sephora stores in late January (though there will be a holiday sneak peek).
In their interview with WWD, the Olsens admitted that the scent development process took two years. “That’s 50 versions not including the various tweaks we made to individual notes,” Ashley said, adding that she brought in her whole cadre of pricey beauty supplies for the first meeting. “People would always say I smell good, but it was really a combination of those things rather than a specific fragrance.”
Mary-Kate says that in order to keep things “as pure as they could,” they kept the fragrances simple with the thought you could layer them. Nirvana White is has elements of peony and musk, and Nirvana Black is darker, with notes of violet and sandalwood.

According to WWD, Jay Z’s will be sold starting Nov. 20 at Barneys New York as part of his holiday collaboration with the store, then rolled out to other department stores for the holidays (accompanied, of course, by a multi-platform ad campaign).
The fragrance comes in a sleek white bottle and a black leather gift box, and has words including “power, success, courage” etched in the gold top. With notes of yellow ginger, cypress, vetiver and bourbon vanilla (among many others), his partner company Parlux promises “extra-luxurious … gilded sensuality.” Says Parlux president Donald J. Loftus, “Jay Z continues to re-write rules and sets new standards, turning everything he touches into gold.”
