Adam Levine may be designing a fashion line for Kmart, but don’t tell him that.

“In a way I’m not into fashion,” he told PEOPLE at an event for his Kmart “Shop Your Way” line in L.A. “What I’m trying to do is something that in a lot of ways is the anti-fashion line, and not necessarily based on momentary trends.”

And after resisting similar offers for years, he latched on to this opportunity because “I wouldn’t have to answer to anybody. There would be no pressure to do anything that wasn’t totally up my alley.”

But don’t think he’s cantankerous about this collaboration — in fact, he’s its biggest fan. “I kind of love it all. I love the way the leather jacket turned out. It was really simple and cool,” he says. “I have definitely lined my closets with my stuff.”

Has he seen anyone else doing the same? “I saw somebody wearing one of my t-shirts at The Voice,” he says. “All of a sudden I see this graphic t-shirt that this guy’s wearing and he’s really into it and he was kind of giving me a thumbs up. I was just really proud.”

What do you think of Levine’s clothing line? Anything you’ve picked up for a significant other?
