At this point, a leather jacket (real or faux) has become such a staple that most StyleWatchers don’t even consider it a challenge. Leather pants? As basic as jeans for many fashionable ladies. Since leather is having such a major moment this fall, we’re always on the lookout for new and inspiring ways to wear it. Leave it to the fashionistas attending yesterday’s CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund event to provide said inspiration.

Though everyone at the party pulled out all the stops, stylewise, there were three ladies with very different personal style who really caught our eye. All three attempted bold leather dresses in very different ways, which is always helpful if you’re typically too timid to approach a major trend.

Camilla Belle, who loves ladylike, classic looks, stayed true to her preferred party-dress silhouette in a Ralph Lauren Collection number with one major twist: It was made out of lime green leather. Though this look may seem impossible to match, her chocolate metallic heels and an iridescent teal clutch did the trick.

Lena Dunham went for a more neutral hue in her light brown leather shift, but though the color may be easier to accessorize, it runs the risk of washing one out. She balanced out the pale hue and simple shape with a bold, mod eye makeup look and slicked-down locks.

Finally, Krysten Ritter pulled out all the stops in a red Thakoon dress with a patent skirt and sexy Jimmy Choos. Between the halter silhouette and the revved-up material, this is a dress designed to stop traffic — though Ritter wisely plays it down for the daytime event with low-key hair and makeup. A ponytail and earrings for night would take the look through the roof.

What do you think of these three unexpected leather looks? Would you be willing to try something a little bolder?
