Want Olsen Twin-Worthy Hair? Their Longtime Stylist Is Spilling Secrets
Say what you will about Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen‘s style — there’s no denying that they’ve always had enviably thick, healthy hair. And while we would like to believe that the secrets to their lustrous locks lay inside their omnipresent jumbo Starbucks cups, as it turns out, there is an actual hair guru behind the scenes keeping their strands shiny.
Mark Townsend, who is also known for Lea Michele‘s glossy locks and Jennifer Lawrence‘s big cut earlier this year, keeps the twins’ tresses in top shape. And now he’s giving The Coveteur’s The Edit some behind-the-scenes scoop on how the magic happens.
“They have such amazing style, it is so inspiring. And it so personal,” Townsend says. “They don’t follow trends — they are usually setting them — so they do what works best for them, what looks best on them and it’s the same with their hair.”
So what does their hair regimen usually look like? For Mary-Kate, he says, she has been “wearing her hair up in a top knot or in a low ponytail which I couldn’t love more on her, and we keep as much of her natural texture and wave as possible … Her biggest rule: No more than 5 hairpins ever, and I mostly stick to that!”
When it comes to Ashley, she’s “been letting her hair grow for a couple of years now. I just ‘dust’ off the ends every eight months or so, but I do it while blowdrying her hair so she doesn’t see the scissors!” he shares. “Ashley really takes great care of her hair so I don’t need to use a lot of products in it.”
“I recently made up a conditioner for the girls … and told them to put it in their hair before swimming and while in the sun; it was coconut oil, almond oil, jojoba oil, and vitamin E. All things I picked up at the health food store!” he says. “When they got back, they both asked me for more and I could feel a huge difference in their hair. They use it a couple times a week and leave it in for up to an hour.” There you have it: Billionaire hair for just a few bucks.
