Surprise! Ponytails are the Hairstyle of Choice at the Emmys

We’re used to seeing center-parted waves. We’ve come to expect a lot of buns. And it wouldn’t be a red carpet without a bunch of plaits. But basic ponytails aren’t usually considered go-to awards show dos … until tonight. A number of stars opted for the typically casual style, making us wonder if ponies are the new braids.

To be frank, we didn’t really notice Heidi Klum’s tiered ponytail at first. (We were too busy dissecting her blinged-out turtleneck Atelier Versace gown.) But once we did refocus our attention on her mane, we noticed that she had multiple bands all along the tail of her pony, and we realized that the fancier style sort of made sense, considering it went with the over-the-top vibe of her gown.

Kiernan Shipka also opted for a casual wavy pony, though she teased the hair at her crown for a look that is slightly more undone than Klum’s. And again, we’ve gotta say: It totally worked. The fun, youthful vibe really jibes with her fresh, floral Delpozo gown.

Amy Poehler eschewed buns, braids and flowing waves, too. She opted for a ponytail, but got low with hers, wearing her blonde strands in a sleek, side-parted wavy tail at the base of her neck.

Also on the pony bandwagon Sunday evening: Amanda Peet, Sarah Hyland and Julianna Margulies.

What do you think about everyone’s go-to gym hairstyle making such a strong showing on the Emmys red carpet? Think we’ll see more of this do at future awards shows?
