Kate's Official Baby Portrait Dress: All the Scoop Straight From the Designer

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge bucked several longtime traditions for the first official portraits with Prince George. First, the photo was snapped by Kate’s father Michael in his backyard. And second, rather than consult a stylist with racks of designer outfits for the new mom to wear, the princess chose a maternity dress from her own closet — an item that she bought several months ago from the high-street brand (and one of her go-to labels during pregnancy) Séraphine.

She loves the floaty, empire-line “Jolene” dress so much, she bought it in three colors: Fuchsia, navy and blossom print (the latter of which she wore the day after she left the hospital headed for her parents’ home in Bucklebury).

It’s clearly a dress that she feels comfortable in and one that suits her new life as a mom. And true to the Duchess’s practical style sensibility, it only costs $79.

“We knew she really liked that dress, but to see her wearing it nearly a month after the birth – it’s so exciting!” says Cecile Reinaud, the founder of the maternity label. “She looks so beautiful in those pictures but also so natural. I think it’s a huge compliment to her that she looks like that in a snapshot, without a top-notch photographer with retouching and everything.”

Seeing as Kate owns twelve items from the brand — they hand-deliver her orders directly to Kensington Palace, just a stone’s throw from their flagship store — Reinaud is thrilled that the princess is still wearing maternity clothes almost one month after giving birth, noting that many celebrities tend to want to show off their unbelievable post-baby shape in regular clothing as soon as possible. “It’s a lovely message to all moms out there: She is not trying to pretend that she’s already lost all her baby weight and that’s really refreshing.”

Looking to nab one of Kate’s favorite dresses for yourself? You’ll have to be patient: It’s on back order until Sept. 16. “We sold over 100 dresses between the hours of 2:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m.,” Rinaud says. Tell us: Do you love Kate’s dress? And how cute is baby George?

Not only does she have good looks, she’s sensible with money too! That dress is a great find, I’d love to get one too. It looks like its very comfortable but still stylish at the same time. Baby George is just a cutie! :)

$79 is cheaper since she is married to prince williams.
that is still super expensive to me.
Is the dress made in UK or overseas in bagladesh or pakistan or guam for pennies and then marked up 150% for profit ?

Show me a $29 dress made in US or UK. Thanks.

She is naturally stunning!

Not that I can’t afford a dress for that price, there are those who can’t. It’s a very pretty dress, not over sensational, but still lovely. Don’t forget, she probably has so many dresses for that pricw, and more.

Precious picture and love the naturalness to it as compared to a professional photograph.

A dress this price is obtainable for nearly anyone if they save up for it lilK.. And all makers mark up prices no matter who it is, even people on handmade websites that are just regular people. The notable fact is that she could afford a more expensive dress and chooses not to shop that way. For a royal, that’s saying something about her character. If you’re unhappy with your lot in life, do something to change your own fortunes. Anyone able-bodied can do that if they try and work hard.

William really knew what he was doing when he picked her for a mate. She could save the monarchy.

Can’t people just comment and say what a lovely picture of the three of them and what a nice dress it is? Do we always have to have people commenting on the price of the dress, and the lifestyle they live? Prince William was born into it and Kate’s parents are middle class people who made their money. No one gave it to them or shared it the way certain people think we ought to. My husband and I aren’t wealthy, but we made every penny we have by taking advantage of free and inexpensive education. We contribute generously to charity, but I bristle at the thought that we should be expected to “share.” They are a decent, nice family so let’s just be happy for them.

Great, natural family photo. I love that they are living their lives under the radar & being homebodies. Such an important time in a young family’s life. Love how they included the dog too. And Grandpa took the photo! Ya gotta love their style!

Yes, @Carolyn from now on we will all just comment the way you feel appropriate. Thank you so much for correcting us.
