Kate's Official Baby Portrait Dress: All the Scoop Straight From the Designer
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge bucked several longtime traditions for the first official portraits with Prince George. First, the photo was snapped by Kate’s father Michael in his backyard. And second, rather than consult a stylist with racks of designer outfits for the new mom to wear, the princess chose a maternity dress from her own closet — an item that she bought several months ago from the high-street brand (and one of her go-to labels during pregnancy) Séraphine.
She loves the floaty, empire-line “Jolene” dress so much, she bought it in three colors: Fuchsia, navy and blossom print (the latter of which she wore the day after she left the hospital headed for her parents’ home in Bucklebury).

It’s clearly a dress that she feels comfortable in and one that suits her new life as a mom. And true to the Duchess’s practical style sensibility, it only costs $79.
“We knew she really liked that dress, but to see her wearing it nearly a month after the birth – it’s so exciting!” says Cecile Reinaud, the founder of the maternity label. “She looks so beautiful in those pictures but also so natural. I think it’s a huge compliment to her that she looks like that in a snapshot, without a top-notch photographer with retouching and everything.”
Seeing as Kate owns twelve items from the brand — they hand-deliver her orders directly to Kensington Palace, just a stone’s throw from their flagship store — Reinaud is thrilled that the princess is still wearing maternity clothes almost one month after giving birth, noting that many celebrities tend to want to show off their unbelievable post-baby shape in regular clothing as soon as possible. “It’s a lovely message to all moms out there: She is not trying to pretend that she’s already lost all her baby weight and that’s really refreshing.”
