Her new hit single may be called “Dance Apocalyptic,” but Janelle Monáe looks anything but disastrous in the music video.

In fact, you may not even recognize the star at first glance; she’s let her hair out of the signature hairstyle she calls “The Monáe” and has swapped her red lips for light pink.

“It was so cool to play with my look for the video, and to showcase to my fans another side of my style which is constantly evolving, just like me,” she tells PEOPLE.

But that doesn’t mean the CoverGirl is ready to abandon her “bold and adventurous” beauty look, inspired by Dorothy Dandridge. “I love a fresh-faced look, with edgy accents such as highlighting the lips or eyes,” she says. “I think adding a pop-of color to the lips transforms any look, which is why I love CoverGirl LipPerfection in ‘Hot’ — that’s my go-to.”

She also relies on CoverGirl’s new Clean Whipped Creme foundation (yes, that’s “Dance Apocalyptic” you’re hearing in the commercial) to cover any skin sins she commits. “Like any other young woman, I have a breakout or two, which is mainly from being lazy about removing my makeup immediately after shows,” she says, but adds that “being genuinely happy has helped to keep my skin healthy and glowing!”

So does anyone get to see her out of her glamorous onstage look? Keep dreaming, Monáe says: “To maintain a sense of balance only my close friends and family get to see what my day-to-day style is.”

Tell us: What do you think of Monáe’s new beauty look in the video? Would you miss her signature style?
