Shailene Woodley Bares Her Soul (and More) About Beauty in Hollywood

07/16/2013 at 01:02 PM ET

Shailene Woodley topless Patrick Demarchelier for Interview

With the Secret Life of the American Teenager coming to a close, it looks like star Shailene Woodley is ready to unveil a few secrets of her own.

The 21-year-old star gets real (and oh yeah, poses topless) in a candid conversation with Emma Stone (as Mary Jane, Woodley will succeed Stone’s Gwen Stacy as a Spider-Man love interest) in Interview‘s August issue.

And she’s dared to bare before: Woodley often walks red carpets without makeup, something virtually unheard of in Hollywood. She was inspired to do this after seeing a photo of herself in a magazine in which “I had big red lips … boobs about three times the size they are in real life,” she says. “My stomach was completely flat. My skin was also flawless.”

“But the reality is that I do not have those lips and my skin is not flawless and I do have a little bit of a stomach,” she adds. “It was not a proper representation of who I am … I just want to be me.”

Part of that confidence comes from feeling insecure as a young teen. “I was afraid I was too skinny,” she tells Stone when asked what she’d tell herself at age 15. “I also didn’t have a lot of self-confidence. I projected a lot of confidence … But on the inside, I was very mean to myself … So I would definitely say to myself at that age, ‘You’re worthy. You’re beautiful.’”

For more from the star on facing those insecurities and the hilarious way she starts the day (plus plenty more dramatic photos) check out her insightful chat with Stone at Interviewmagazine.com and tell us: What do you think of Woodley’s photos and her commitment to makeup-free red carpets?

Not a fan of the pictures, but I appreciate her commitment to being true to herself and being honest about who she is.

Her face looks unhealthy.

Heroin… Does a body good

Cady Bryant on

Well, I liked her with clothes on. :/

I understand trying to promote body love, but posing in the nude doesn’t really seem to be the most fitting when they airbrush and photoshop the heck out of you.

I hope they choose someone else to play Mary Jane in Spider Man 3. She just looks to young compared to Emma Stone. Almost childlike. I do not mean any of this as a hateful or rude comment, just my two cents, which these forums are for. :)

Yikes, that’s a horrible photoshoot. Not because she isnt a beautiful girl(she is) but because those pictures make her look like she’s some skinny, drug addict(when she’s a very healthy looking girl normally)

Cool she looks nice

I thought the exact same thing!

I really think she is a lovely young woman, however I am not a fan of the pictures. She is so talented, I don’t get the pressure Hollywood puts on young actresses. And I thought I read her part was cut from Spiderman, which I didn’t understand because seems perfect for the role.

Julia Emry on

really? i dont get why going topless if good for anyone, doesnt make sense to me.
