Megan Hilty has a big hair secret.

“I love pieces,” the actress told PEOPLE at the Blonde Appreciation Month Art Installation hosted by John Frieda. “I use them all the time. But you have to get good quality one.”

Hilty said she once wore a set of bad hair extensions, and it’s one of her biggest beauty fails to date.

“They just ended up looking long and stringy,” she shared.

The 32-year-old actress and singer who played Marilyn Monroe on NBC’s show Smash, also tried switching up her blonde shade and went brunette for a year.

“It was kind of a strange thing,” Hilty said. “It didn’t fit my personality. It didn’t feel right.”

As for wearing the iconic Marilyn wig, the star said the platinum hue also changed her personality.

“Even though I’m a natural blonde, that shade of blonde [the Marilyn Monroe style] did feel very different. It made me instantly feel more glamorous.”
